Understanding Your Daily Focus

Recently I have been teaching a class on how our emotions and intent can help to create or undermine our hopes and desires and it has me thinking about how sometimes emotions that we consider positive can have a negative impact on outcomes. Likewise, negative emotions can end up bringing some positive results.

How we view or deal with emotion and feelings can have a huge impact on how we move through life, face challenges, and ultimately find our happiness.

This week’s Daily Focus looks at our innermost feelings and emotions and how they can both hold us back and push us forward.

January 11

“Happiness is a choice, not a result. Nothing will make you happy until you choose to be happy. No person will make you happy unless you decide to be happy. Your happiness will not come to you. It can only come from you.” Ralph Marston

We can wait for happiness to be a part of our lives or we can realize that we are an active ingredient in manifesting it. Many of us believe that having a specific thing, achievement, or person in our lives will finally make us happy, but a lasting happiness is something that we can create by our outlook and approach to life. Today’s word is Proactivity.

January 12

“When moments of happiness take us by surprise, it’s not that we seize them, but that they seize us.” Ashley Montagu

Sometimes you can’t plan happiness. How many of us plan our vacations and parties right down to the minute, trying to cram in as much ‘happy time’ as possible, only to find ourselves laughing and completely overcome with joy during the down time? Perhaps it occurs on the drive, during set up, or from some crazy mishap during the event. These are most likely the moments that will stay in our memory as some of the happiest moments of our lives. Never forget that happiness can come when we least expect it. Today’s word is Unplanned.

January 13

“Usually when people are sad, they don’t do anything. They just cry over their condition. But when they get angry, they bring about a change.” James Russell Lowell

Sadness is a needed and important emotion, but it can lead us to inaction because it can so easily drain us. After we have worked through the sadness, sometimes we get a burst of anger or indignation that pushes us forward to change either ourselves or the world around us. If you are going through a difficult time, allow yourself to grieve, and then see what you can change so that you never find yourself in a similar situation. Today’s word is Metamorphosis.

January 14

“Feelings are much like waves, we can’t stop them from coming but we can choose which one to surf.” Jonatan Mårtensson

Feelings and emotions can hit us out of nowhere, and it can be hard not to get caught up in them. But learning which ones to ride out and which ones we allow to wash over us is an important lesson. Emotional responses are normal and healthy, but allowing them to control us or not is fully in our control. Today’s word is Choices.

January 15

“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart” Helen Keller

A flaming sunset, the gentle coo of a newborn baby, the breathtaking stillness of a heavy snowfall, even a piano concerto, these are all beautiful and they stir something inside us that must be measured by more than how they look or sound. They seem to touch something inside our hearts, don’t they? I admit to being moved to tears at pieces of music or even watching my elderly pup sleep. Maybe I am just sappy, but beauty and emotions seem to go hand in hand. The next time you see something exquisite, feel how much your heart is enhancing that beauty. Today’s word is Unfathomable.

January 16

“We cannot selectively numb emotions, when we numb the painful emotions, we also numb the positive emotions.” Brene Brown

I think everyone goes through times when we wish that we could turn off the pain, sadness, or doubt that fills our thoughts and hearts. But if we could then we might also stop being able to feel all the positive feelings that makes life worthwhile. It isn’t uncommon for us to feel numb after a shock or loss, and sometimes we need the objective clarity that can come from that perspective, but we also need to remember that life is fuller when we allow ourselves to feel the full rainbow of emotions. Today’s word is Myriad.

January 17

“Feelings come and go like clouds in a windy sky. Conscious breathing is my anchor.” Thich Nhat Hanh

Emotions, whether good or bad, can sometimes make us feel as if we are drowning or out of control, which is definitely not a good feeling. This is when taking a moment to focus on our breathing or another focal point can help us to find our footing and re-ground ourselves. Learning breathing or meditative techniques can be a huge help, and including a daily meditation practice is something that we all should try to do. Today’s word is Anchor.
