Being Sensitive Makes You Stronger

The Stigma Around Emotional Sensitivity

The myth that emotional sensitivity is a weakness is a common one in most Western societies. This arguably says more about what these cultures value and comprehend than it does about emotional sensitivity itself. Sensitivity is not very compatible with the demands of late-stage capitalism, nor does it fare well in a world where stimulus levels are consistently rising. However, neither of those things defines strength. So, let’s examine the ways in which sensitivity actually points toward strength rather than away from it.

Sensitivity is a heightened awareness of the energies and feelings around and within you. There are a plethora of ways in which people experience and respond to emotional sensitivity. These include taking on other people’s feelings, experiencing physical pain or discomfort because of tension or other unpleasant dynamics, choosing to remove yourself before you’re negatively impacted, or relying on your own boundaries to protect you from feeling or participating in things that don’t serve you.

As the gateway to many spiritual methods of navigating the world, emotional sensitivity is a superpower of sorts. It is often confused for weakness because it isn’t always easy to deal with. You have to build the necessary skills and understanding in order to wield it. Otherwise, you might find yourself at its mercy. But once you do so, emotional sensitivity is an extremely useful tool for taking stock of your surroundings and deciding how to proceed.

The Merits of Emotional Sensitivity

Being in touch with and having the ability to share emotions and vulnerable truths is a key indicator of sensitivity. These are signs that someone knows themselves and is comfortable offering that knowledge to others in order to connect meaningfully. Vulnerability often comes with a risk of rejection, something that most people fear deeply. While most sensitive people will hopefully develop the ability to discern when such vulnerability is safe, their inclination toward sharing can put them at risk of rejection fairly often. Facing this common fear requires strength and courage that some are never able to muster.

Sensitive people are also more likely to feel empathy for others, which gives them a greater understanding of other people’s plights and may also bolster their relationships. When you understand the struggles of your loved ones, you’re less likely to take something personally when it isn’t about you. In turn, when you have strong relationships, you probably have a solid support network. An understanding of other people’s motivations and a strong support network are powerful ingredients for resilience.

People with emotional sensitivity often understand the benefits of slowing down and taking their time. As a result, they tend to appreciate and absorb their surroundings more. This can heighten their sense of satisfaction and contentment, both of which can also result in higher levels of resiliency.

Emotional Sensitivity Takes a Steel Spine

Living as a sensitive person in a culture that denigrates emotional sensitivity can be difficult. In a society that places almost all value on logic, facts, and evidence, the inexplicable is viewed as inferior, if not downright wrong or foolish.

Sensitive people often have a strong relationship with their intuition. In this context, intuition is a way of inherent knowing or understanding without conscious reasoning. Of course, logic, facts, and evidence are indeed useful tools for deduction and knowledge acquisition. However, they are not the only tools. The current culture has led many people to disregard the information they acquire through their sensitivities. This is unfortunate because it means that modern culture loses out on valuable information from which it might otherwise benefit. The emotional and mental health crises that are currently plaguing society may have been at least somewhat lessened if people were not consistently told to disregard — or worse, squash — their collective sensitivities.

Another difficulty that accompanies emotional sensitivity is the degree to which you’re affected by the world around you. In learning to cope with this challenge, you may develop, if you haven’t already, a repertoire of self-care tools to keep yourself balanced. Knowing how to self-soothe is an underrated and massively important skill if you want to cultivate a resilient life. Strength isn’t just about never getting knocked down. It’s about recovering and returning better than ever. Self-care tools can help you do just that.

Be Proud of Your Sensitivity

The current demands of Western society are arguably unsustainable and unreasonable for any person. Sensitive people may struggle outwardly, but less sensitive people may still struggle in other, less readily apparent ways. Ultimately, needing to take breaks or limit one’s exposure to stimuli is not weak. Likewise, being in touch with one’s emotions is not a sign of excess fragility. These are side effects of being sensitive in a culture not designed for sensitive people. The ways in which sensitive people adapt to their surroundings require tenacity and resilience. As it turns out, strength is a much more nuanced concept than most people have been led to believe.
