Have you ever felt like you were on the brink of something wonderful, and yet the timing wasn’t quite ready yet? It’s like being a kid the week before Christmas or your birthday! You want to speed time up and at the same time you relish the feeling that something amazing is about to happen. There is even a word for this feeling: Vorfreude, the intense anticipation of joy, thinking of future pleasure.
Life is filled with those periods where we feel that giddiness, and know that life is about to manifest those desires that we have been working so hard towards, or that the leap of faith that is about to be the most amazing thing we could ever have done for ourselves or our futures.

Patience is not an easy thing, and for some of us, it is really not our forte. When we are waiting for something to happen, for someone to come into our life, or to be able to take another step on our life path, it can feel as if you are being punished, or at least intentionally being thwarted by the Universe. During these times it is hard to have faith that everything is happening just as it should. Look at these periods of stillness as a needed breather so that you can be ready for life’s next adventure. Today’s word is Breather.

Yesterday we were anticipating today, weren’t we? But when today comes we seem to forget what we were looking forward to in the first place. If we are always waiting for a better tomorrow, it is easy to miss the wonders that are happening around,
and to us, and ultimately we forget to live! There is nothing wrong with looking forward to wonderful things that are yet to come, as long as we take joy in the days as we experience them as well. Today’s word is Today.

The antithesis of the giddy excitement for the future is fear, concern, and hesitation. This fear saps us of our enthusiasm for better tomorrows and leads to a future that does not live up to our dreams or allows us to live up to our fullest potential. Being practical is one thing, staying stagnant because of fear is something completely different and we need to be vigilant of when we stop looking forward with hopefulness. Have more faith in the choices you are making and the paths that you will take so that although you may pause in your journey, you are not afraid to take the next step. Today’s word is Confidence.

Surprises happen, often when we least expect them, and when good surprises happen out of the blue they taste so much sweeter! Keeping a sense of wonderment and open anticipation makes our lives richer and lets the incredible things that happen feel luxurious and even more spectacular than they otherwise would. Today’s word is Extraordinary.

Planning seems like such a boring thing, and some things truly are dull, but maybe we should take as much pleasure in the journey as we do our arrival. I admit it, I love planning parties and gatherings almost as much as the event itself. Planning what to serve, decorations, and music really gets me revved up and like many, I enjoy surprising my guests with the unexpected. And as much as I enjoy spending time with my guests, once the day arrives, I sometimes wonder if the planning isn’t just as much – if not more fun – than the event itself. Today’s word is Journey.

Clench your hands into a fist. Now try to pick up your cell phone, or a pen, or turn a light on. It’s not easy, is it? It might be impossible! Worry does to our energy and minds what clenching your hands does to your dexterity, it makes it impossible to do anything constructive or positive. At some point we have to release the fist if we want to be able to answer that ringing phone. And we have to relinquish our fears if we want to answer the call our future is making to us every day. Today’s phrase is Let Go.

Sometimes anticipation can feel amazing and other times it can be overwhelming, or even induce fear. This begs the question: Why do we usually plan for the worst? Now I am not saying that we should all be Pollyannas or forever be the optimist, but can’t we find a middle of the road? We waste so much time and energy on worrying about things that we don’t always have the time and energy to put towards good things in our lives. Not to mention that if what happens is bad we won’t have the needed reserves to face that challenge, making it so much more difficult to effectively deal with it. Try looking at the future with a cautious optimism instead. We may find that we enjoy the now more and have more fortitude to face the challenges tomorrow. Today’s word is Equilibrium.
