Understanding Your Daily Focus
Recently, a family member went through a major surgery and I have been spending a lot of time with her. We mostly talk, and I’ve been enjoying her perspective on what life is supposed to be about and how to make the most out of what we have. Even with a lot of healing and recuperation ahead of her, she is staying positive and blowing the mind of her surgery team with how far she has come in such a short period of time.
Her enthusiasm for being open-minded, positive, and always looking at what tomorrow can be like if we are unafraid of what’s around the corner has truly encouraged and invigorated me. I hope that this week’s daily focus will do the same for all of you.
“A man’s mind is stretched by a new idea or sensation, and never shrinks back to its former dimensions.” –Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr.
Keeping an open mind and learning new things will always change us, even if we don’t ultimately agree with what we have just been told or learned. Being flexible and open to these new ideas can ultimately help us gain new perspectives into issues that will come into our lives down the road. Today’s word is Expanded.
“I may not be there yet, but I am closer than yesterday.”
Every day brings us a step closer to our goals and dreams, even if only incrementally. Sometimes, viewing the big picture can make us freeze and feel as if we will never attain what we are striving for. This is when focusing on easily attainable objectives can help us tackle the bigger goal that we are ultimately working towards. Always remember that each step forward is a win! Today’s word is Closer.
“The need for connection and community is primal, as fundamental as the need for air, water, and food.” –Dean Ornish
Although we all need time for and to ourselves, being connected with other people is something that we all need. Even the most introverted of us still sometimes need to feel like we are part of the whole. Just going out and being around people, even if we don’t talk to anyone, can reinvigorate our energy. Today’s word is Cohesion.
“Present your best ideas to an eager and welcoming audience.”
Not everyone is going to be supportive and gung-ho about our ideas, and though we can understand this, it isn’t easy to get shot down right out of the gate. Turning to those people who are in our corner can help to keep our energy high when we are getting ready for big changes. This is especially true when the people we can turn to help us to see where some challenges might be, but in a positive way. Leave the hurdles until further into the race! Today’s word is Cheerleaders.
“I’d rather have roses on my table than diamonds on my neck.” -Emma Goldman
I have been gifted expensive gifts that I have loved, but the gifts that touched my heart the most were the ones that either my daughters or students would make for me. I still have many of these items scattered throughout my home as reminders that there is beauty in simplicity and that there is a profound love that comes from simple gifts given with a pure heart. Today’s word is Simplicity.
“We often refuse to accept an idea merely because the tone of voice in which it has been expressed is unsympathetic to us.” –Friedrich Nietzche
It is so easy to tune people out because of how they have reacted to us in the past, even when the person in question may have valid points or insight that we could use to better our lives. I’m not saying that we need to allow negative people to talk at us non-stop, but perhaps we can try to keep one ear open so that we can hear the messages Spirit is trying to give us through all the people in our lives. Today’s word is Receptivity.
“If you do not listen to your own being, you will have betrayed yourself.” –Rollo May
We worry what others may think about what we wear, the music we listen to, our ideologies and beliefs, even the jobs we have, and over time, in order to minimize confrontation we stop listening to our own hearts, voices, and souls. It is time to put our voices and our understanding of ourselves at the head of the list of who to listen to. Today’s word is Genuine.
