Understanding Your Daily Focus
The winter holiday season is now here and over the next several weeks many of us will be celebrating with friends and family. Before we know it we will be saying goodbye to one year and welcoming in another, but before then we get to focus on the connections in our lives that bring us joy, with people who are both near and far.
This week’s Daily Focus will draw on that sense of excitement that this time of the year brings, no matter what holiday you celebrate.
“The Winter Solstice is the time of ending and beginning, a powerful time — a time to contemplate your immortality. A time to forgive, to be forgiven, and to make a fresh start. A time to awaken.” –Frederick Lenz
Tonight is the longest night of the year, a time for celebration and introspection. Winter is a time of hibernation for some animals, but for us it can be about looking into ourselves for mistakes we made, learn what we can change about ourselves to make the upcoming year better, and to forgive others for what we believe they have done to harm or stagnate us. Move forward through the longest night and know that as the sun slowly starts to reclaim the sky that your tomorrow will be just as bright. Today’s word is Awakening.
“Winter is not a season, it’s a celebration.” –Anamika Mishra
Considering how many holidays there are from now until the middle of March and the beginning of spring, it is easy to agree with this quote. If we wanted to, we could probably find any number of little and well known holidays to bring a festive flavor to the cold of winter. Maybe that is the real lesson that we can take from this idea, that everyday should be a celebration and that we shouldn’t wait for the red-letter days on a calendar to realize it. Today’s word is Revelry.
“As we rush around buying presents, we must always remember that our ‘presence rather than our presents’ is one of the greatest gifts we can give.” –Catherine Pulsifer
Many of us worry about finding the perfect gift for our loved ones. We run around, going from store to store in hopes that we will be able to find that one gift that will stand out above all others and that will put that special sparkle in their eyes. It is so easy to lose track of what is important – our connection with each other. Never minimize the gift that you are to the people in your life. You are just as wonderful as any wrapped gift that can be found under the tree. Today’s word is Presence.
“May your walls know joy, may every room hold laughter, and every window open to great possibility.” –Mary Anne Radmacher
It’s said that a building that is haunted has sad or painful memories stored in its walls; however, houses and walls can hold onto all the positive memories and energies too. This season, strive to let the past be the past and focus on the wonder and joy of the here and now. Let the walls around you take in that energy and let it imbue you and those you love with strength and positivity well into the future. Today’s word is Infuse.
“This is my wish for you: peace of mind, prosperity through the year, happiness that multiplies, fun around every corner, energy to chase your dreams, and joy to fill your holidays!” –D.M. Dellinger
For me this is the cornerstone of what the winter holidays mean. It is even better when we can keep these ideals in our hearts and thoughts throughout the year. May you always find a quiet moment to think and dream, may you find numerous reasons to laugh and play, and always find a way to follow your dreams. These are my wishes for all of you, now and for the upcoming year. Today’s word is Gift.
“In a way, winter is the real spring – the time when the inner things happen, the resurgence of nature.” –Edna O’Brien
We don’t usually think about winter as a time of growth, but it is a key component in the process. Winter is a time of sleep, rest, and internal work. Seeds go dormant and store up energy so that come spring they can push through and dazzle us all with their blooms. We can use this time of year as a way to look within, to recharge, and plan what will bloom in and from us in the upcoming year. Today’s word is Seasons.
“A snow day literally and figuratively falls from the sky unbidden and seems like a thing of wonder.” –Susan Orlean
Winter is a time of wonder and magic for children. From thoughts of Santa coming down the chimney to the way that the snow can make even our familiar back yards look like something from a fairy tale. Children see the world with a wonder and newness that we have forgotten by the time we become adults. This week, submerge yourself into the wonder of the season and allow a childlike perspective remind you of the magic of the season. Today’s word is Fascination.
