Understanding Your Daily Focus

Hello Fellow Seekers! This week I was fortunate enough to spend time with friends and family and the conversation turned to how important it is to celebrate the small things in life and not to save the good china only for formal holidays, so to speak. As I was driving home I thought about how there are so many little known holidays to help give us reasons to grab our party hats and celebrate life.

Even though we shouldn’t need an excuse or reason to turn up the music, we usually are so trapped in our regular day to day life to make time for such things. This week’s daily focus is inspired by little known holidays to help us realize that even a chocolate chip cookie is a good reason to celebrate.

August 3

Watermelon Day. “Life is like eating a watermelon, you know you’re going to get some seeds; just spit them out and take another bite.” -Jeff Steinmann

Watermelon is one of those ubiquitous summertime foods, but who would ever think of it as a symbol for the surprises of life? Much like biting into a piece of watermelon, we can’t always be sure if we will only find sweetness in the bite or if there will be a seed to thwart our happiness. No matter how many seeds we may find, most of us don’t stop enjoying watermelon, and yet when life throws seeds at us, we often pull back and stop ourselves from trying something new. We should aim to take on life the same way we do that piece of melon: with hope for the best, fully knowing that there might be a few unpleasant surprises, but still willing to take another bite of life! Today’s word is Chances.

August 4

Chocolate Chip Cookie Day. “Friends are the chocolate chips in the cookies of life.”

All cookies are good! Snickerdoodles, peanut butter, sugar, but there is something about a warm chocolate chip cookie that makes us become kids again. Having the right people in our lives not only sweetens ours, but theirs as well. Friendships help make the wonderful times in our lives even more fulfilling and can lessen the difficulty and burdens that the trying times bring. Consider baking some cookies with your friends today or make them yourself. Turn into the cookie fairy and gift some yumminess to those people who are the chocolate chips in your life. Today’s word is Share.

August 5

Work like a Dog Day. “People will try to impress you by saying they work like a dog, but how many dogs actually work?” -Patti Dawn Swansson

Our four-legged friends may not always have ‘jobs’ per se but they certainly do put their all into everything they do, don’t they? They can find joy in the smallest of things and truly live in the moment. Perhaps it is this unadulterated sense of happiness that makes so many of us smile just from seeing them trot down the street, wagging their tails. When was the last time you allowed yourself a moment to slow down and simply BE in the moment? Or enjoy something silly that simply infused you with pure happiness? Many of us do get a lot of pleasure from a job well done, but if we can put that same enthusiasm into our downtime, we will truly live a balanced life that perhaps even our doggy friends will envy. Today’s words are Be Present.

August 6

Wiggle Your Toes Day. “What a wonderful beautiful thing, to wiggle your toes.” -Dalton Trumbo

Whether it is wiggling our toes in fresh cut grass, in the warm sand at the beach, or in the water; there is something so carefree about releasing our toes from the confines of our shoes and letting them wiggle around. Even when we are deep into our work, how many of us have snuck our feet out of our shoes to move them and release some of the stress that has been building up? I know I have! Who would think that doing something as simple as wriggling our tootsies can help to break the tension and strain of a taxing day? Not to mention the wonderful feeling that comes from being barefoot outside and allowing the earth to ground us. Today’s word is Grounded.

August 7

Lighthouse Day. “Friends are like lighthouses, with the sources of light coming from their hearts.” -Tom Baker

Lighthouses guide the way, can signal a safe haven, and warn of trouble ahead; a friend to sailors for generations. Friends do the same things in our day to day lives. They are our guideposts when things go wrong, they cheer us on when we need support, celebrate our achievements, and when we are about to do something that isn’t in our best interests, they do their best to steer us away from the rocks. Much like a lighthouse’s fire, our friendships do need to be cared for and maintained, which can get tricky with the hectic pace at which most of us live. Reach out to a friend that you haven’t connected with for a while, catch up, and see what is happening in their life. You may find yourself a beacon for them when they need it most. Today’s word is Friendship.

August 8

World Cat Day. “Way down deep, we’re all motivated by the same urges. Cats have the courage to live by them.” -Jim Davis

Out of all the animals that share our lives, cats are probably one of the most authentic. They are true to themselves, for good, bad, or indifferent, and they don’t wear masks. We can all learn a lot from our feline friends. No, I’m not advocating that we all walk around hissing at people or clawing your co-worker when they reach for that piece of cake that you were about to grab, but there is something very freeing about casting off our masks and no longer trying to be everybody’s everything. When they want to play, they play, when they need a rest, they nap. They listen to their hearts, minds, and bodies and pay attention to what they are saying. Try to take some time to stretch out in your favorite spot today as a way to honor those lovely little purr boxes, and listen to what your own body is telling you. Today’s word is Courage.

August 9

National Hand Holding Day. “Nothing in this world compares to the comfort and security of having someone just hold your hand.” -Richelle E. Goodrich

From the moment we are born, we instinctively grasp someone’s hand (well finger.) We seem to know the power there is from just holding someone’s hand – or them holding our own. Holding hands gives support to both people, it allows for a transfer of energy, and even in the darkest of hours, it can give us the feeling that we are not alone and that everything will somehow be all right. It is such a simple gesture that can mean so much to us when we are frightened, sad, or overwhelmed.  Hold someone’s hand today, it may be what you need or perhaps what they need; no matter what, everyone wins. Today’s word is Connection.

Whenever you need an excuse to celebrate, look to see what little known holiday it is and in time you will learn to give yourself permission to celebrate something every day!
