Tarot: To Find Wisdom, Practice Foolishness

In the Tarot, while the Hanged Man may appear closest to the Christ archetype at first glance, the Fool is the one who is truly the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. The Tarot is the Hero’s Journey, as Joseph Campbell puts it. And the Fool is the hero. The Fool is not only one card, it’s the card that journeys through all the other cards, gaining the wisdom of each card as it goes.

The Fool is always ready to step off the edge into the unknown. This is a perfect image of faith and grace. Through mastery, peace, balance and chaos, the Fool keeps moving forward. Regardless of your soul card, birth card, or other designation, when you enter the path of initiation, or the path of the spiritual seeker, you become the Fool.

In ceremonial magick, it is said that the Magus who dares to attempt crossing the abyss to journey into total attainment must do so without attachment to the outcome. This is where the Mage and the Fool meet. Mastery combined with innocence is the portal to full realization of the Self, and the realization of Self is the realization of God.

In a devoted life, you become the Fool. At moments of greatest faith in Divine Will, you walk forward without hesitation, knowing that whether you fly or fall, a purpose will be served. And with perfect faith, as you step off the precipice with child-like innocence, the ground will, more often than not, rise up to meet your feet.

Being the Fool, you are also Alpha and Omega. You are the beginning and the end of the journey. Faith is faith. Will is will.

And pure will, unassuaged of purpose, delivered from the lust of result, is every way perfect. (Liber AL vel Legis I:44)
