Understanding Your Daily Focus
Is it just me, or is this year slipping by insanely fast? We all probably say this every year, but 2019 really does feel like it went by faster than usual. It feels like it was just yesterday that spring and warm weather had come to beautiful New England and now here we are embracing cooler days, getting ready for Halloween, and realizing that before we know it Thanksgiving will be here; quickly followed by all the winter holidays.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could slow things down a little bit? Enjoy the moments that we are given, from the most unique and spectacular to the plain and simple ones.
Time is one of those things that we usually say that we don’t have enough of, that it slips through our fingers like sand. So, with this week’s Daily Focus, let’s think a bit about time and how to make the most of the time that we have.
“The future has a way of arriving unannounced.” –George F. Will
Oh goodness, isn’t this the truth! Whether we plan for it or not, the future will always come and it usually comes with a surprise, even when we think we have planned for all contingencies. The unfortunate thing about this truth is that when we are caught unawares or unprepared we get flustered and uncentered, which can only make things worse. Tomorrow will happen, whether we plan on it or not, so perhaps it is best to simply expect the unexpected. Today’s word is Arrival.
“The perfect time to do what you love is now.” –Neil Strauss
I think most of us are guilty of squeezing in work tasks, family tasks, helping others, etc. into our limited free hours but when it comes to those things that charge our own batteries, we put them on the back burner. This is especially true for activities that we really love to do! It is so important to remember that we are just as important as the people in our lives and the responsibilities that we have. Starting now, strive to do one thing a week that you truly love. Today’s word is Enjoyment.
“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” –Chinese proverb
How often do we find ourselves wishing that we had taken advantage of opportunities that had presented themselves to us in our pasts? Probably too often! Then we sit, get down on ourselves, and feel that our time has passed. We couldn’t be more wrong, because we have today to plan and tomorrow to do. Go back to school and take some interesting classes or finish your degree. Take up a new hobby that can bring new energy and people into your life. Change careers if you feel that what you are doing no longer fulfills you, or go on that dream trip and see the world. Tomorrow always has the chance to be what we want it to be. Today’s word is Commence.
“Life isn’t a matter of milestones, but of moments.” –Rose Kennedy
First birthday, first day of school, driver’s license, graduating, twenty first birthday, getting married. All are milestones that we focus on, but on our way to getting to those milestones we have moments in between that define and teach us, and those are just as important as the Red Letter Days on our calendars. Focus on the wonder of the in-between and you will find that the milestones are richer for it, and you will be too. Today’s word is Moments.
“Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.” –Lao Tzu
We’re always in a hurry, sometimes to a place, or towards a goal, and sometimes we hurry up simply to wait! We seem to believe that the only way to make things happen or come into our lives is to push both ourselves and the timelines that are meant for us. But take a look around you… spring sometimes seems to come later than the calendar says it will arrive, but the trees grow new leaves when everything is ready. Nature has learned the lesson that everything will happen at the right time, no pushing, prodding, or coaxing from us is needed. Take a lesson from nature’s playbook and allow things in your own life to come about when the timing is right and you will find so much of the frustration that plagues you disappearing. Today’s word is Patient.
“Time is your most important resource. You can do so much in ten minutes.” –Ingvar Kamprad
Ten minutes seems like such an insignificant amount of time and such a small amount of time can easily get lost in the 1,440 minutes we have at our disposal in any given day. Most of those minutes are scheduled out for us, but if we try we can usually find a few minutes in there to call our own. Reclaim some of those minutes for yourself. Start with gifting yourself five to ten minutes each day to dedicate to you, and only you. Whether that is ten minutes of doing absolutely nothing or ten minutes spent on a hobby or past time that fills you with joy. Today’s word is Revive.
“The whole future lies in uncertainty: live immediately.” –Seneca
The future is never guaranteed, small choices that we make can shift the lines for us and for others, just as choices made by others can impact our lives. This is why it is so important to enjoy today while we make plans for tomorrow. When we are older and look back, it is so much better to remember what we did accomplish with a smile, then think about how we were so focused on long term that we let the todays disappear. Today’s word is Present.
