Powerful and Passionate
As we find ourselves in the middle of the spookiest, spiritually charged month of the year it is no surprise that we arrive at a sign that is considered to be one of the more psychically sensitive of the Western Zodiac: Scorpio, beginning on October 23, and ending on November 21. Scorpios are famous for having magnetic and enigmatic personalities that exude sensuality. They also tend to be drawn to some of the darker or scarier aspects of life and its many mysteries.
The symbol of this sign is of course the Scorpion, a creature that was interpreted in several different ways by ancient cultures. The ancient Egyptians honored them as guardians of souls as they moved from one world to the next and was sacred to the Goddess Serket (Serqet) who ruled over fertility, nature, and medicine – especially venomous stings and bites, magic, and animals. Some believed they brought bad luck while others venerated them as symbols of transformation, life, death, and rebirth, and of strength.
Come with me while we part the ever-thinning veil and learn just how complex this sign is.
Still Waters Run Deep
Scorpio is a Fixed Water sign, and as we know when water isn’t moving towards something or away from something, it lies in still pools that traditionally are the homes to creatures of myth like Naiads, Nøkkar, Kappas, and Kelpies. This sign represents and embodies extremes. There are no shades of grey for Scorpios: The highest points and the lowest, life and death, light and dark, black and white. This is why people say that Scorpios are so passionate; it is part of their spiritual makeup!
Ruled by…Well That Depends on Who You Ask
Traditionally Scorpio is ruled by Mars, the most ‘aggressive’ of the planets, but once Pluto was discovered it became the modern ruling planet for this sign. Pluto governs the unseen, the cycle of life-death-rebirth and the eighth house in astrology, which is the house of sexuality, the occult, emotional intensity, intuition, death, healing, and transformation. Isn’t it great how that all plays out?
When you take the energy of both Mars and Pluto you start to see the many layers that go into your typical Scorpio.
Positive Scorpio Traits
They can be exceedingly thorough and exacting when they are working on projects that interest them and getting the education and qualifications they need in order to succeed. They are amazingly astute and can usually tell when someone is lying to them, so don’t even try! Scorpios are very loyal and as they learn early on how to determine if they should trust someone, so when they let you in, they will be a staunch advocate for you. They are dutiful, sacrificial, and often put those they love or care about on a pedestal.
They can charm anyone they come into contact with, and make excellent salespeople and team leaders as they are great at encouraging others.
Scorpios also tend to have fantastic senses of humor and possess amazing imaginations which makes careers or activities in any of the creative fields a perfect fit.
The Sting of the Scorpion
The downside of all of that emotional intuition is that when a Scorpio gets upset, they sting people with painful words and actions. Their sensitive nature can make them act first and think later, as their feelings are very easily hurt.
The charm that we talked about as a positive also has a shadow side that can show itself in the form of a manipulative personality if the Scorpio doesn’t learn how to balance themselves.
As they hate boredom, they sometimes will create drama and issues just to alleviate or circumvent any sense of ennui. Luckily as they can learn new things quickly, they can usually find other ways to stave off boredom and monotony.
When it comes to working with other people their perfectionism and blunt outspokenness can make co-workers and colleagues feel like they are being picked on or attacked.
The Scorpio Child
These young ones are often described as quiet, intense, and they usually have very intricate and detailed fantasy worlds that they spend much time in. Young Scorpios can be a bit overly sensitive, as they haven’t yet learned how to shield themselves from others. And much like their adult counterparts they can quickly run the range of warm, loving, clingy, aloof, cold, harsh, and mean all within a 30-minute time period. Having close ties to their parents goes a long way in helping to temper the more negative aspects of this sign. With the right parental approach and guidance, they can learn better ways of working with people rather than trying to manipulate them.
The Romantic Side
The Scorpio lover wants to know who you are right down to your core and will use all their intuitive abilities and charm to do so. Just as they are loyal to their friends, employers, and even doctors, they are even more so with their romantic partner. Even though they may be the sexy beasts of the zodiac, once they are in a relationship, they put all that sexual energy and intent into their partner.
Just be aware that the Scorpio can be a bit of a jealous type. This doesn’t necessarily mean that they get upset if you have friends or talk to others, sometimes it can be brought about because of the time that you put into your career or other activity rather than spending time with them. That being said, they aren’t codependent and can easily stand on their own two feet.
Scorpio’s day of the week is Tuesday. Although their birthstone is either Turquoise or Topaz Scorpions don’t have to feel limited. Pale coloured stones like Kunzite, Aquamarine, Hiddenite, Rhodochrosite, Opal, and Variscite all resonate well with their gentler side, whereas stones like Dioptase, Garnet, Malachite, Obsidian, Red Spinel, Boji Stones, and especially Charoite all speak to the hidden depths and complexity that truly define the Scorpio’s heart and soul.
Plants and herbs that are aligned with this sign are Chamomile, Mugwort, Poppy Seeds, Cinnamon, Orchid, Gardenia, Rhododendron, Heather, and particularly Chrysanthemums which help them to connect more easily with their higher selves and maintain a spiritual outlook on life rather than losing themselves in the purely physical.
Whether their passion manifests itself through art, science, creation, or acting, these Scorpios brought their power and vision into our world. Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, Georgia O’Keeffe, Johannes Vermeer, and the ever wonderful Bob Ross all created art that lives on today and still inspires others. Scientists and inventors like Marie Curie, Jonas Salk, Bill Gates, and Edwin Hubble made our known world safer and opened us up to new possibilities thanks to their passion to find answers. Some famous Scorpio actors and performers include Julia Roberts, Whoopie Goldberg, Leonardo DiCaprio, Rock Hudson, Katy Perry, Bjork, and the ever-elegant Grace Kelly.
