What’s Holding You Back?

Is Something Holding You Back? And if So, How Do You Stop it?

Studies suggest that we are all capable of amazing feats, both mentally and physically. However, the reason we fail to achieve success is that we blame outside forces for holding us back, when we actually have more control than we give ourselves credit for. There are several common pitfalls that almost everyone falls into, and any one of these could be the problem that is keeping you from getting where you really want to be.

Too Much Comfort

What happens when you spend your time in a lifeboat, worrying about keeping it steady so you wont fall in and drown? You miss the opportunity to learn to swim, and abolish that fear all together. The problem with becoming too comfortable in life is it can cause you to focus on maintaining that comfort, rather than achieving new goals and maximizing your potential.

Perfectionism

Are there certain goals in your life that you continue to put off, simply because you’re waiting for the perfect moment or for your abilities to meet overly high expectations? This may include sending a resume, going to school for a new career, or settling into a relationship.

Lack of Facts

Most people’s fear lies within inaccurate facts and a grim imagination. You may already know that the best way to rid yourself of your fears is to face them. However, part of that will rely on collecting the facts about what it is you fear. Once you know exactly what you are up against, it becomes much easier to create concrete steps to help you overcome that fear once and for all.

Excuses

“He that is good for making excuses, is seldom good for anything else,” said Benjamin Franklin. Excuses may make you feel better about not accomplishing certain things. However, they may be the very reason why you toss and turn at night—deep down you know the real reason is that you are too afraid to try.

Lack of Faith

Destiny is a driving force in life. However, we all possess the hidden ability to pick ourselves up and overcome many obstacles. The most important thing is that you believe in yourself, and have faith in your abilities.

The Past

We are all a product of our past, however, we don’t have to let it keep us down. Are you constantly reminding yourself that you’re a victim? Experience life, make choices, learn from your mistakes and then move on to making better choices in the future.

Bad Company

You are an individual. However, who you choose to keep company with will influence your attitude and confidence in many ways. It can’t be said enough—if you want good things out of life, you need to associate the majority of your time with good, inspirational and positive-thinking people.

Bitterness

Negative energy can be a draining force, much in the same way keeping bad company is. Don’t allow what your friends and co-workers have to make you bitter about your own life, as nobody has the perfect life. It is all an illusion.

Approval Addiction

Almost everybody suffers from a certain amount of addiction to approval. Many people seek the approval of friends, family or partners, so they do whatever it takes to get it. This can include putting dreams and goals aside just to please someone else. Don’t do that! The only person you need to satisfy is yourself.

Love for People Who’ll Never Love You Back

You can love people, but don’t spent your energy caring deeply for someone who will never return that kindness. Find someone who will love you just as much as you love them!

Negative Incentives

“No pain, No Gain” is a common belief, in life, love and physical fitness. But when you are constantly reminding yourself that you are not good enough, how are you giving yourself the incentive to be better? You will start to believe in your own words.

Clutter

Research suggests that too much clutter in your life can cause unnecessary stress and energy drain. Get rid of the things you no longer use, clothes you don’t wear and friends who are not really your friends.

The Idea that More is Better

Every person must balance their time between their friends, partner, career and hobbies. Giving an extra amount of energy to any one of these will not necessarily make you any more successful, or more likely to enjoy a happy life. You need to find a way to balance all of these.

WOW! You have certainly listed every item that I can identified with. How I let these things hold me back for so long, I don’t have the answer. Probably the fear of letting go of all these things would be right and the lack of faith in myself. I feel like all my dreams and ambitions, and the man I would like to be with, have past me by and with it, life itself. Being close to retirement, I feel I can still achieve some of them but I will be giving up a lot! It’s that fear of leaving the comfort zone that stopped me from being all I am. Time to do some soul searching and taking a long look in the mirror. Thank you for your list, good article!!!

Boy! You hit the nail right on the head! There are more than one items which I can certainly identified with. Thank you for being so candid, hitting me right on the face, and opening my eyes. How I let these things hold me back for so long, I don’t know! Time has really past me by and I feel like I lost all my dreams and ambitions with it; and the real person I want to be with. It has certainly made me do some soul searching. Even though I am close to retirement, I feel I can pick myself up and start all over again and get rid of all the fears that have held me back or that I have made excuses for, and leave my comfort zone! Thank you for helping me see why I haven’t moved forward. Please pray for me!

brilliant ideas- I am developing my hobby into my career as I never found work that I could put my heart into though it took me many years of failed jobs to realise this as I had been trying to be what my dad thought I should be and that can be another reason that can hold you back trying to be someone who you really aren’t
