Mystical and Powerful

When it comes to birthstones, those born in the month of June are particularly fortunate. Instead of just one special stone to mark your entry into the world, you get three powerful gems from which to gain meaning. Moonstone, Pearl and Alexandrite all have their own particular symbolisms and powers. Here’s what you need to know about each of them so you can harness their mystical energies.

Moonstone

Common lore around moonstones maintains that the gem can give the gift of foresight—that is, if you put the stone in your mouth during a Full Moon. It was thought that the gravitational pull of the moon could draw energy out of a moonstone to allow someone to see their own future. Worth a try, right?

Moonstone is one of the most varied of stones, at least as far as its healing properties are concerned. It’s been said to do just about everything: inspiring creativity, increasing confidence, heightening intuition, and calming fears. Most notably however, it’s known as the stone of new beginnings, inner growth, and rebirth. This makes it an ideal token for times of change or transition.

The moon is often associated with feminine energy, so it makes sense that the moonstone is as well. Moonstone has been utilized to regulate menstrual cycles, alleviate the pain and discomfort of PMS, and has been a tool in aiding with pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding.

Moonstone is used as a healing tool because of its supposed power to unite the body with its own life energy and healing ability, as well as strengthen the body’s connection with the Universe and all living things. It’s said to help with digestion, hormones, emotional openness, and the elimination of toxins.

Pearl

Pearls have long been revered, dating all the way back to 2300 B.C. when the Mesopotamian people considered them precious. As the only “stone” created by a living animal, pearls are not only rare, but also biological miracles. Only about one of every 10,000 oysters will contain a pearl of value.

Pearls have symbolized a number of things, including friendship, fertility, and loyalty, but they have also been used as tokens of mourning in the face of death, serving as a symbol of tears. Legends have named pearls as the tears of the gods, while the ancient Japanese in particular believed that pearls were the tears of mythical creatures like mermaids and angels.

Surely, you’ve heard the phrase “pearl of wisdom.” This is because pearls are thought to provide their bearers with the knowledge of experience. In ancient China, black pearls in particular were associated with wisdom, and people believed they were created inside the heads of dragons. To get the pearls (and the wisdom), one needed to battle a dragon—and win, of course. Black pearls have also been associated with wealth.

Alexandrite

Alexandrite wasn’t discovered until the 1800s, unlike other stones that have been utilized in ancient times. One of the rarest gems in the world, it’s marked by its changing green to red color, often called an “emerald by day, a ruby by night.”

Likely because of its adaptable color, Alexandrite has been called the “traveler’s gem.” It’s thought to help people adapt to new environments, understand foreign languages more easily, and decode the ways of other cultures. Put one in your carry-on before you take off on an adventure.

The stone of good luck and romance, Alexandrite is often associated with long, happy marriages. For this reason, it’s commonly used as a stone for engagement rings. (Though, of course, it pales in popularity to the traditional diamond.) The gem can also symbolize self-confidence.

Alexandrite is thought to be helpful in boosting medicines used to treat chronic illness, and aid in healing cancers like leukemia. It’s also been thought to be beneficial for easing conditions with the spleen and the pancreas, as well as issues with lymph nodes.

Spiritually, the gem is helpful in showing that things may not always be what they seem. By heightening imagination and bridging the gap between the physical and the spiritual world, it brings healing energy, peace, and hope.
