Get Ready for Supermoon Saturday

Supermoon Event as Full Moon Comes Closest to Earth in Eighteen Years

On Saturday, the full moon will come closer to the Earth than it has in 18 years, in what many are referring to as a “Supermoon” event. (For those keeping track, the moon will be traveling from Virgo into Libra.) The moon will appear as a giant presence in the sky, and potentially have tremendous effects on consciousness. (After all, the moon has such a strong gravitational interaction with the Earth that its pull is what causes tides in the world’s oceans—and after you consider its effect on that much water, consider what effect it must have on the tiny human body, which is made up of anywhere between 55% to 78% water. The brain, of course, is made up of more—about 70%.)

While many are expressing fears that the Supermoon might cause further natural disasters, NASA scientists have been quick to relay the message that this isn’t the case. Many have pointed out that the last Supermoon occurred two weeks after the 9.0 Indonesian earthquake—however, at the actual time of the earthquake, the moon was actually almost as far from the Earth as possible (240,000 miles), making claims of a Supermoon/earthquake effect not particularly realistic.

FOX News reports:

Thanks to a fluke of orbital mechanics that brings the moon closer to Earth than that it has been in more than 18 years, the biggest full moon of 2011 will occur on Saturday, leading some observers to dub it a “supermoon.”

On Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, the moon will arrive at its closest point to the Earth in 2011: a distance of 221,565 miles away. And only 50 minutes earlier, the moon will officially be full.

At its peak, the supermoon of March may appear 14 percent larger and 30 percent brighter than lesser full moons (when the moon is at its farthest from Earth), weather permitting. Yet to the casual observer, it may be hard to tell the difference.

The supermoon will not cause natural disasters, such as the Japan earthquake, a NASA scientist has stressed.

What do you think—what changes will the Supermoon bring, if any? And how are you celebrating or observing it?
