Fishing For the Answer

I live in the Pacific Northwest on the coast and I like to crab and fish in my free time. I’m known on the docks as the “little lady who out crabs and fishes everyone” … I’m not thrilled about the ‘little lady’ part but it’s not meant to be disrespectful so I just smile.

How have I become so good at this? Well, it’s simple, they choose me. I walk to the Medicine Wheel and ask if there are any crab or fish that hear my voice and choose to be food for my family and loved ones. I also make sure they know that I’m aware they are offering themselves up in a “good way” and that I’m humble and grateful that they heard my voice. I am very aware that they are giving up their life to me for food and that I will not waste or treat their lives lightly.

It is the most profound thing when I see this happen … it actually reaffirms the connection with All.

I remember a few years ago, I set my intent, made an offering of tobacco and asked if there were any salmon that would hear my voice and choose me to be nourishment for my family. Yes indeed, they heard my call, although I was chosen by Native Coho salmon numerous times and had to release them as they are illegal. It took a frustrating salmon season for me to understand that I needed to be more specific … so I asked for only legal salmon to hear my voice and choose me. They eventually did!

I teach the Medicine Ways and when I have gone on a Vision Quest, I set my intent by asking if there are any that share our planet who have a message, lesson or blessing for me. Trust me when I say that on my first Vision Quest, I was stunned to learn I was claimed by both bear and badger clans. I did not choose the bear or the badger… they chose me.

Within the Ways of Medicine, if you are not receptive to all species it means that you are not connected to All.

Often times, during my work with clients, animals of all species will show up to assist. From four-legged animals to swimmers and crawlers – it is very interesting to see what a client’s animal guides are and how they interact with each other! I am grateful for their help.

Hi Maryfrances, what a delighful article. I grew up my first part of childhood in the hollywood area. My parents had me later in life, the only daughter, with older brothers. For the second part of my childhood, my father, a fisherman, moved us to a town about 30 miles from Los Angeles, a little mini “switzerland” town-
We lived on a lake. It was a total shock to a hollywood kid-I was lonely, no friends etc. But my dad had taught me how to fish-I learned how to communicate to my only friends at that time-my Irish setter, ducks and geese and the fish….It really changed me…..I can so relate to your story…
    Thanks,
    Miss Krystal

    Hello MaryFrances,
Its was so nice to read your article, this is my ways, as they are yours, I love what you said about giving offerings, every morning and night I give an offering of tobacco or water and sometimes cornmeal, I have been taught you never take or just ask with out giving first, I have found this way of life, keeps me more in balance and my life as well as my family’s life is connected with the stone people, the herbs, water, fire, air, mother earth, we are a team.

By the way I also love to fish, just being able to connect with the living waters is so healing….

Wonderful article Blessings and Big Hugs to you!
