Everyone Else’s Timeline

2016 is now the equivalent of a one-month-old baby. Do you feel like you’re more organized, more fit or more enthusiastic? Are you on the road to big changes? Did you watch a bunch of television commercials between football games and Star Wars that suggested you should be more engaged, more athletic, and buying better groceries? Are you meeting your own expectations? Or do you feel like everyone else has expectations for you? Or are you back to feeling how you did before the holidays and settling into comfortable habits?

High Hopes and Busy Times

After the holidays settle down my main goal is to cut back on planning. I am always a planner, but January is a busy month where the hopes are very high in the collective consciousness. So while I am excited for every new year that begins, I am also ready to get back into my groove first, and then make changes later.

Make Anytime Resolutions

New Year’s resolutions are definitely worthwhile endeavors, whether it’s getting in shape when you don’t feel healthy, eating nutritious foods more often, or trying to save more money. Personal goals and guidelines help us challenge ourselves to grow. But it’s easy to get discouraged when your busy life gets in the way or you don’t see improvements as quickly as you’d like. Please don’t get discouraged. I saw an online meme that read: “You actually don’t have to wait a year to make a change.” This is a superb reminder that every day is new. Escape the paralysis-inducing worry that comes with trying to plan your life around socially expected timelines.

Living Up to the Hype

It’s great to take advantage of the excitement surrounding a new year to make everlasting changes, but don’t feel like you have to live up to the hype. Any day of the week, or any time of the year is a good time to get started on your personal growth. You could even start on a regular, old Sunday like today!

Get a Big Head Start

You don’t have to be on the same timeline as everyone else to make change happen. It kind of takes away from your individuality. For example, I decided in September 2014 that I really needed to start exercising and getting in shape. I consistently starting going to different exercise classes and working out. So when January rolled around and many of my friends were starting their new life goals, I actually liked that I had this big head start. It was personally satisfying to know I was already knee-deep into a goal when others were just starting.

Seeing the Fruits of Positive Change

I became the person giving advice to friends when not long ago I was the one researching. Sometimes you really see the fruits of your positive change when you begin preparing others for an experience that was previously new to you. Just know that if you’re feeling like you’ve fallen behind in some timeline, you can start, continue, or stop whenever you feel the time is right for you.
