A Lesson on Dream Filters

Let’s explore the different types of filters we should think about when looking at our dreams.

When analyzing your own dreams, you should ideally run them through several filters. The first being the simplest and most obvious:what did you do the day of the dream? Did you have an enormous argument and then dream of explosives or buildings being torn down?

What did you eat before you went to bed? The meaning of your dream could be caused by something as simple as eating something that didn’t agree with you, and be a biological reaction. These types of dreams are just reflections of recent experiences you’ve had.

Do any of the symbols in your dream have special meaning for you? This is the second level dream. For instance if the color red is in your dream, does it have special meaning for you? (i.e. is red the color of a favorite dress you wore to the prom, etc.)

These types of dreams also include cultural symbols. These are symbols we all share, and whose definitions are common in all dreams. For instance, most of us have dreamt of flying when we were in our early teens. During adolescence, this dream usually depicts freedom from limitations, in this case biological. Some other common universal symbols are the cross, commonly viewed as a symbol of Christianity. Water is another universal symbol regarded as emotions. The choppier the water, the more unsettled the emotions.

Level three dreams contain archetypal images. In other words, these are images drawn from the collective unconscious. According to psychiatrist Carl Jung, archetypal images are a shared set of symbols that have reoccurred throughout history and across cultural boundaries. Some examples include “Mother Earth” or “Father Christmas”. Do you get the idea? These level three dreams usually occur during a time of great stress and transition such as marriage, divorce, or death of a loved one. You will know these dreams by the feeling that you’ve encountered a force much greater than yourself.

What could be happening to me. My marriage is a bit rocky. I used to have this dream even before I got married. Any advice.

    Hi Sparkly,
By your description, I can see that you very much enjoyed your surfing dream. It would be interesting to remember what was going on in your life at the time of your dream. According to your dream, it sounds as if everything was going great, and you were feeling very much in control of your destiny at that time~!
And yes, we do subconsciously absorb the messages our minds send to us. That is why the mystics tell us that we have all the knowledge we need inside us, that we know what is best for us, and that we know exactly what is happening to us, and where we are meant to go. We just need to find a way to access this all-knowing information. One way is by interpreting dreams, another meditation, and yet another prayer (which is, after all, another form of meditation). I’m sure you can think of many other ways.
    Much luv & lite~!

    Hi feelin_sparkly,
Wow! What a beautiful dream! The one place in the world that I’ve always “dreamed” of going to was Tahiti. I hope I make it there in this lifetime!
Wouldn’t it be cool if all of us here on this blog could “meet” during a dream one night at that beautiful beach you mentioned? I don’t surf either, but I wouldn’t mind basking in the Tahitian sun and watching YOU surf (hey, it’s a dream, and you can surf like the pros and I’ll cheer you on!)

Thank you Ariel. I’m wondering if in those deep dream states, we subconsciously absorb the messages then?
The surfing dream was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I was in Tahiti at this break called Teauhpoo its one of the biggest heaviest waves in the world. Completely beautiful when its firing. I have yet to go there in person (at least in this dimension lol) but that night, I dreamt I was in the channel (an area just outside the break where people watch the action and setup to drop in) the water was deep luscious blue and when I dropped in on that wave, I remember exhilaration, silky seas and a perfect break! I rode the wave gloriously to shore. Could feel the water overhead, was totally in ‘the green room’ as they say, could even feel the motion of the wave. Woke up completely stoked and can to this day, months later, vividly remember the feeling of that dream! lol
The funny thing is, my son is the surfer. I love to watch the sport but have yet to ride a wave standing on a board!
    🙂

Early a.m. dreams usually are created at the end of our sleep cycles. These are the ones we usually remember. However, when we are awakened by a loud noise in the middle of the night, we are interrupted during a deeper part of our sleep cycle (the Theta or Delta levels). This is generally the period of dream cycles that we don’t remember. Consequently the dreams are different. We generally have four or five dreams per night, depending upon how long we sleep. It is usually the dreams we have in the Alpha state that we remember.
btw: what kind of sea did you encounter when you were surfing in your dream?

Thank you Ariel! What’s the significant difference between how you wake up? I’ve had dreams that woke me up and I was physically still in it.. very weird sensation (the coolest one was a surfing dream though lol)

Abigail Thank you! Sometimes it seems I have the same dream all night! lol When I was little in fact, I used to have horrible nightmares until I came up with this idea to run all the horrible possibilities by in a movie frame to remove the fear from it before I went to sleep. I never had nightmares again 😉 Used to be able to control my dreams really well too – so fascinating the whole subject!

Psychic Abigail, can you go back into the mode you were in when you had the dream and try to recall what was being shouted at you? Also, how did you feel when you woke?

I almost always remember my dreams right after I wake up, but don’t write them down. I will try to remember any significant symbols and then look them up in dream dictionaries. It’s funny because my co-workers will come to me and ask what their dreams meant, because I always look mine up first thing in the morning.
But I wasn’t aware there was so much more to them and the levels and that the time you dreamt them had different meanings. This is very interesting. I almost always remember the morning dreams, some 1-3am dreams and only because they wake me up in the middle of the night. The only thing is I don’t remember dreaming in color too much.
I know I’ve had a couple of premonition dreams, but I can only remember one in detail. That dream was connfirmed the next morning I dreamt it! I was very excited.

What a fascinating topic of conversation I love your article Psychic Ariel…
On thing I have done is while I’m going to sleep I will go visit with the Native Grandmothers or a guides that I work with I will start discussing some thought or concerns that I have or ask to recieve council perhaps on an insure I may be wondering about a question I may have, then most of all I ask to remember the information that I recieve, even though I may not remember the answers that I recieved, but my brain waves does, so then there for I have found that I can recall it at a later time when I need to, just a little bit of sleep fun….

I appreciate your comments, Sparkly~! And yes, you are correct. It does make a difference as to the time you had the dream. It also makes a difference as to when you wake up. Was it naturally? or were you awakened in the middle of a dream by a loud noise, etc.?

    Sparky,
Yes sweetie the time does have significance morning dreams 4-till wake up are things that your subconscious mind is venting out. Early morning ie 1-3 am are precognitive these are premonition dreams the ones where you get a glimpse of the future events coming in.
    Blessings

    Hi Ariel,
Great article…. ( my grandDaughter’s name is Ariel too, by the way ).
…..colors generally stand for emotions too in a dream……
Whether or not it is daytime or night time IN YOUR DREAM is significant.
Psychiatrists actually learn dream analysis in Medical school..I was taught dream-analysis by one of the top Psychiatrists in the USA today………
This Doctor has taught me that a daytime background in your dream is from the left side, logical, analytical …whatever is going down in your daily life….playing out in your dream state.
But a dream with a dark, night time background is coming from the sub-concious right side of brain….the psychic, creative side. THOSE are the dreams that generate your psychic premonitions. Those are the dreams my guides help me translate to the client.
Keep a dream journal, because different symbols mean different things to different people.
    Blessed Be )O(…Gina Rose ext.9500
PS…AND,…watch what you eat before you go to sleep…green bananas ALWAYS make me dream in techni-color 3-D. LOL

    love these dream interpretation articles!
Im wondering if the timing in your sleep cycle helps to determine the level? for instance dreams right before you wake or after 3am?
quick example I had a dream last night (seemed like it was long throughout the night, but think it was really in the wee morning hours) that had a yacht with a baby elephant, a big animal (cant remember now what it was but I remember being astonished that a dog was sleeping on it), the water was warm and inviting and my dear friend (think of her like a soul sister) was inviting me to dive in with her. I did and swam out to the yacht to ‘rescue'(though there seemed no urgency) this baby elephant and get it to swim back with me. Which we did.
I know this isn’t the forum for dream interpretation, however, reading of the filters this dream seems to contain a couple of them. Is that possible?
