Avoid Neglecting Your Needs

This week I want to look at something that I’ve been working on, endlessly, for as long as I can remember. It can be very hard to find a way to be heard, to be recognized, and to be seen as you are. Often, we are taught to defer to others, putting our own needs aside for the sake of taking care of children, a partner, or family members. These people rely on us and it can be easy to set aside our wants and desires, allowing their needs to supersede our own.

Yes, it can be hard to talk about not feeling validated. However, that doesn’t make your needs any less important. Here are a few reminders for this week, to let you know that your needs, desires, and feelings matter. Remember, your presence is divine.

Saturday, May 7

“It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.”
—E.E. Cummings

It can be easy to ignore your inner voice when it seems like the people around you are operating on a totally different belief system. We have all put our own feelings aside to fit in at one time or another. It is the path of least resistance, and it can keep us safe. But, at a certain point, you have to learn to let your inner light out, speak your truth, and become who you are meant to be.

Sunday, May 8

“The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.”
—Coco Chanel

The first step is knowing how you feel, sorting through your emotions, and finding your truth. Then, it’s time to speak it into existence. You’ve put in the work to get where you are. If there are people in your life who are treating you poorly, if you aren’t being compensated fairly for the work that you do, or if you feel like you need to set boundaries with family, then it’s time to draw on your courage and put those feelings into action.

Monday, May 9

“When we share those stories we’ve been scared to share, voicelessness loses its wicked grasp.”
—Jo Ann Fore

Holding feelings in and keeping secrets has a way of turning small hurts into massive bleeds. Tough thoughts and emotions lose their power when we speak them and share them. This alleviates so much of our own internal shame. If something is eating away at you, consider confiding in a friend.

Tuesday, May 10

“You are closer than you think and more qualified in your message than you could ever fathom”
—Rebecca Campbell

Regardless of how you feel, the truth is that no one in the world has the same experience, outlook, and attitude as you do. Even if you think there are other, more qualified people in the ring, so to speak, their existence doesn’t diminish or disqualify your own experience. You have something unique to add to any situation, even if you’re not the leading authority. Your voice is still important, and your story deserves to be heard.

Wednesday, May 11

“The Buddha left Bodh Gaya to teach others. Jesus came out of the Judaean desert to preach. Spiritual awakening is meaningless if it does not culminate in finding your voice and speaking up for what is right.”
—Anthon St. Maarten

Even if you’re not planning on starting a religion, your voice still holds power and can bring the truth to light. Sometimes making a difference in one person’s life is just as powerful as making a difference on a large scale.

Thursday, May 12

“Your voice is the most potent magic in existence.”
—Michael Bassey Johnson

There is a reason that spells involve speaking, that prayers have words, and that songs are sung together. Our voices are able to create worlds, connect us to each other, and move others to tears or laughter. Using these voices is a tool and a gift. It’s a good idea to use yours in a positive way today.

Friday, May 13

“Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one’s definition of your life, but define yourself.”
—Harvey Fierstein

You can do things differently. You don’t need permission, a handbook, a YouTube video, or even this very article to explain that it’s okay to follow the voice in your heart. What you have to say is valuable and important — it can change the way others see the world and open up doors for you. Hiding your voice does a disservice to yourself, and also the world. You never know who could benefit from your words.
