Red Responds: Feeling Sour About the Business

Dear Red,

After 14 years of employment at the same office I left, mostly due to my co-workers. Now I am lost not knowing what my future career is. Or even if I will ever be employed again.

I feel very sour about the business and don’t know if I will be going into the same career that I have trained for or something new, and when this will happen. I feel like I am here to accomplish more out of life, yet I have no ideal what that path is. I have alot to offer and just want to make a difference. I thank you for any advice you can give me.

Enjoy the time off while you have it, because it looks like you will be gainfully employed once again by the end of the year!

I know that you are disheartened by the people you worked with and a little with the industry in general. But the truth of the matter is, you are very good at what you do.

It seems as if you are going to be doing the same type of work, because it feels very safe and familiar. However, you do your job well, and it is a means to an end.

If you wanted to move in a different direction, you may want to look at opportunities in the insurance industry. I personally despise all-things-insurance, but I’m just the messenger. I’m not quite sure exactly what the job title is, but apparently you can capitalize on your training and experience, and assist a lot of people. It feels more related to health than property, auto, or sales.

The way this is being shown to me is if you choose to explore this option, you most likely will start out in an entry-level position, most likely as office support or something. While that may not sound thrilling, the environment is rather fast-paced and upbeat. As you settle in, you will be learning a great deal, and groomed to move forward in a career path that can ultimately put you in the position to have your own business.

I’d check into this avenue, if I were you. It really seems to help restore your faith in people and yourself. It also fulfills your need to make a difference, which in turn, creates a difference in you.
