Spiritual Effects of Psychedelic Music

“Psychedelic, man!” An expression heard seldom in the year 2010 was once the depiction of what some would call a generation devoted to spiritual freedom, creative expression and many attempts to reach that higher level of consciousness … one way or another. What happened to the magnificent musical trips so many manifested in the 60’s and 70’s? Drug users aside, not all found it necessary to use hallucinogens to let the music of Pink Floyd, Cream, or The Beatles take them on a spiritual ride through imagination and fantasy.

An article I came across on TusconCitizen.com talks about the effects, benefits and experimentation of how psychedelic music does more for you than just paint a pretty picture in your mind — it could actually help you reach your spiritual goals. The author of the article, Tyler Woods, describes his experience with psychedelic music … “It allowed your spiritual being to expand and develop. The possibilities became endless. I think that is why as a kid listening to psychedelic rock, I felt like I was tripping because I got the spiritual aspect of this music. It really was like finding God without even looking.”

So what is it about psychedelic music or any music for that matter that could lead you into the realm of enlightenment? Music has a profound affect on the human psyche — both the brain and the mind. From before a human is born, to someone well in their 80’s, music stimulates the thinking, analytical, and planning parts of the brain, not to mention, the creativity center! It causes the brain to produce feel-good endorphins and chemicals are released that promote healing.

Psychedelic music specifically came from a place of a newfound freedom and experimentation — experimenting with sounds, lyrics, even the length of songs — all had the aim of taking the listener on a ride. The Beatles came out with one of the first publicly known ‘psychedelic songs’ Lucy in the Sky of Diamonds which featured Eastern spiritual influences, rare instruments and the use of the some of the earliest electronic machines. Stuff to just ‘freak you out, man!’

Depending on the type of music you listen to, whether it’s the guitar-ripping of Jimi Hendrix to the classical symphonies of Beethoven, music can take you to a place of complete inner solitude, fill you with the sense of oneness between you and the world and is an excellent way to deepen your spiritual journey.

Is there specific music you listen to in order to enhance your spirituality? Any key experiences with music that stand out?

hey I like what you express in your writing, man I understand exactly what you mean, I have felt at one with the universe many times by a specefik artist that I will take up soon. over the the years I have listening to and reading from many sources and forums about psychedelic music but never have i herd or seen someone mention anything on this particular figure. I can find a lot of lsd music forums but they listen to boring music. I have heard grops from gong psychedelic rock to jazz, blues, reggae, yes exactly all genres during the time I tripped and now I’m listening to Franz Schubert and Chopin yes I think you understand what I am getting at … but on acid if u want too feel the presence of the creator y should listening specific on GEORGE, any song with him will make “se” the thing is that wherever I go to in this different forums I never hear or se someone mentioning George Harrison with songs like HEAR ME LORD or Breath Away From Heaven or WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS no one mentions these songs I think this is relly strange and weird …

I, as Carmen, was introduced to TRANCE music along with blindfolded trance dancing over 10 years ago. In fact, I once was a staff member in a seminar where this type of activity was a part of the workshop. I also agree that sound, vibration clearly affects the chakras. The first link I am presenting is for Carmen. The second is all about emotional impact. I hope you enjoy it! Excellent topic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=By42Mp1qVF8 and here is the other linkhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XojVmivqDrA

    Great Article Justine,
Music is a universal language. It speaks across, time, culture, history, everything. Psychedelic rock music and it’s “effects” share many similar qualities with the music that Native American, Tribal African, and Australian Aborigenes, use for sacred cerimonies and rituals. It makes so much sense to me that there are forms of Western contemporary music that help serve this similar purpose. Thanks so much for sharing this article with us. It was truly a pleasure to read!

Music is one of my passions. Finding new bands, seeing live music inspires me beyond belief. I find I turn to different artists depending on my mood, but I love deep souls like that of Leonard Cohen, Curt Colbain, Cat Stevens, etc. This music transends. Absolutely. I love world music also and that reflects my unbiding interest in other cultures, places, people. A current favorite of mine in Paris Combo. Belle du Berry, the singer for Paris Combo is sublime. If anyone gets a chance, you tube them and look up a song called Living Room.
I found a great band last summer called Nightmare of You and they are very witty and darkly funny, kind of like The Smiths. And for just bouncy dance music or light stuff, I love Fountains of Wayne, a band from The East Coast—they are too funny and every song makes you want to sing and dance. I guess you could say I am a music geek. lol

What other music would I listen to, but Trance? LOL. It is fittingly called that, because it really does put me into a trance kind of mode. When I listen to it, I can concentrate much easier and focus with absolute clarity.

Any type of drumming or “etherial” music also works for me if I need to relax, concentrate, drown out other noises or get into a certain state of mind. So besides trance, nature sounds, drumming, native American music, Dead Can Dance, etc. will all do the trick. 🙂

And yes, as Surora stated, Drum N’Base also works well.

    Dear Justine,

I must agree with you 100%. I am addicted to electronic music. Whether its trance, lounge, house, hard rave, hard dance. I feel transported from earth to heaven especially when I find a good mix. There are so much good techno music out there, I just find it hard to get hold of it. I am a club fan and love go to a good party, but only once a month. I have too many things to explore and just wish to have more of electro music. I am building a website where I wish to incorporate electro music with my latino dance moves …lol… its going to be lovely. What music do you love the most by the way. I also love classic music, but to me electro music is the wild part of classic music…..:)

    Hi,
    Great article……as a Woodstock child ( yes, I was there, yes, I’m that old…LOL)……

I can honestly tell you that to this day, when I hear Janis Joplin, or Jimi Hendrix, or whoever, it not only brings back fond memories but reminds me of the change, movement, and spirituality that permeated the air back then.

The music, and musicians, remind me of why I marched in demonstrations in the streets back then……the music was all about change. It was about NOT conforming to archiac stereotypes and truly was devoted to changing the world thru peace, music, and love.

    Blessed Be )O(

Glad to you liked it! And to put my 2 cents in… I am drawn to musicians that are evidently old souls, Christina Aguilera, Joss Stone, Jonny Lang to name my top 3… these artists and their music strike something in my soul that is unexplainable. They resonate with me in such a way that I am engulfed in their performance, their sound, their voice. They bring tears to my eyes, send goosebumps all over my arms and I am completely, spiritually, whole heartedly with them on a ride.
