Stereotypes vs. Reality: Destigmatizing Psychics

Your Deep Secret: Trusting in Psychics or Your Own Psychic Abilities

You’ve felt it: the disapproval and lectures from friends and family because of your trust in psychics. Or maybe your own psychic abilities have provoked prejudice and fear in those you care about.

Fortunately, some progress has been made toward destigmatizing psychics, astrologers, Tarot readers and mediums. Business leaders, investors, healthcare professionals and even clergy consult psychics regularly to identify future times of opportunity and learn how to take advantage of them.

Yet some people still react with shock and contempt when psychics mention their profession. This is the result of stereotyping based in fear and a superficial understanding of what psychics do and who they are.

Three Toxic Stereotypes About Psychics

  • Psychics are misfits. They’re weirdos who can’t get any other kind of job. They aren’t like the rest of us; they never do normal things like cook, exercise, or raise kids. They spend all day talking to ghosts because they don’t have any friends.”
  • Psychics are power-mad. They enjoy scaring and controlling people to get them addicted to their advice.”
  • Psychics are in league with the devil. Evil spirits tell them what to say and do. Psychics are like ‘guerilla’ warriors who zap the unsuspecting, placing curses on people for money or ‘just because.’”

People believe these stereotypes in part because of what they have seen in movies and on TV shows for years: plots featuring zombies, vampires, demons, mind-control wizards, and other caricatures of those involved in the “paranormal.”

While any profession has its charlatans, most psychics do not fall in that category. Even very gifted psychics have missed a few psychic clues along the way, and they will be the first to admit it. No psychic knows everything, but some clients will label a psychic a fake if they don’t hit 100 percent accuracy, even if they get 95 percent of the information correct.

Real psychic ability is not sorcery; it’s actually a “normal” human faculty that can be used in a positive and protective way.

What Are Psychics Really Like?

Psychics are ordinary, good people with the ability and the willingness to see the person behind the surface impressions that clothing, social masking and title create.  They have the capacity to perceive and receive symbolic information, translate it into ideas, then into words, and then communicate those words in ways that bring clarification and comfort to those who seek insight.

Just because psychics have a spiritual skill doesn’t mean they are exempt from ever getting mad, disappointed, ill, or frightened. Part of the psychic pathway is to experience both the typical and the challenging in life so that they can empathize and help with complicated human situations. They simply want to help and heal human problems using whatever tools and gifts they have.

Sometimes helping and healing is uncomfortable, and sometimes what psychics see is traumatic — that’s why they need to do energy clearing before and after readings. The asteroid Chiron, dubbed the “wounded healer,” symbolizes how this works. By working with and through their own wounds, psychics help heal others. That work with others is the “medicine” for their own wounds, but doesn’t cure it. Instead, they keep working on it so they can help others stay clear of dangers ahead.

You can’t judge a book by its cover, and you can’t know a psychic by their “uniform.” Costumes and props are fun, but they are just that. Psychics don’t necessarily drift around in gauzy purple, sit surrounded by crystals in an esoteric sanctuary, act in mysterious ways, or even light a candle every time they give a reading. Some of the most spiritually evolved and effective psychics (and their clients, for that matter) look just like business people, shopkeepers, or academics — because that’s what they are.

Conversely, I once visited a hair salon where the proprietor dressed in black and red, was heavily tattooed, wore black fishnet stockings, and had a “shave” haircut. We chatted happily, and I felt that I had met a kindred spirit until she asked me to please not use the word “chakra” in her salon. She felt it came from the devil and was inherently offensive.

Destigmatizing Psychics: A Long Way To Go

We psychics still have a way to go before we can bring all our skills and abilities into mainstream acceptance. Yet, more and more often there is a complementary merging between the “acceptable” sciences and the psychic and metaphysical ones.

And remember, just because we can see what will happen doesn’t mean that our clients need to hear it all right now, unless they specifically ask. If we use our abilities in loving, positive ways, one individual at a time, we can spread the help and healing just a little bit further.
