Shorter Days, Longer Nights

When we mark the end of daylight savings time by setting our clocks back an hour, don’t think of it as one less hour of daylight – think of it as one more hour of nightlife! Here are our favorite ways to take advantage of longer nights – whether you’re on your own or with someone special.

Get some sleep
Sleep may be the last thing on your mind when you’re deciding how to last spend your extra hour of nightfall, but a little extra shuteye could actually help your social life.

They don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing. While you’re sleeping, your body heals and repairs itself – so lack of sleep can lead to uglies like bags under your eyes and acne breakouts. Studies also show that sleep improves everything from alertness and memory to personality.

Get together
It seems there’s never enough time to see all the friends and family in your life. Instead of trying to cram all your together time into the weekends, make plans for a weeknight family dinner or a reunion with old friends. And what’s a better way to spend your extra evening hour than catching up with loved ones?

Get out of the house
Most people spend Monday through Friday working for the weekend. After a full day at work, all you want is dinner and a few sitcoms before bed. But with an added hour of nightfall comes an excuse to make the most of the night. Instead of vegging on the couch, make use of your extra hour by heading out for a night on the town. Check out a local museum, go see a play or catch a movie – whatever it takes to bring a little weekend to your weekday.

Get cuddly
Whether you’ve got a partner or are flying solo, you can use the early darkness as an excuse to settle in for a slumber party. Light some candles, take a bubble bath and slip into your favorite pajamas. If you’re alone, settle in with your favorite book or comfort movie and a bowl of Ben and Jerry’s. If you’ve with someone, take turns giving each other massages and see where the romance takes you.

Get up early
Of course the other end of turning the clocks back means you’ll once again have light in the morning. Use the extra light to hit the gym or go for a run. Take your dog for a walk in the early morning sunshine. Read the paper on the couch. If you’ve got a special someone, make a romantic breakfast – or stay in bed for some extra together time.

Get the most
Daylight savings or not, there’s always time to begin a new adventure in your life. Whether it’s day or night, darkness or light, the point is to make the most of every moment of every day.
