Do Pets Have Spiritual Experiences?

We have talked a lot on this blog about animals — mostly how to better communicate with them as well as sharing stories of the special ways our pets show us love.

I ran across an interesting story in Psychology Today of all places that brought up a topic we have not yet explored.

Do animals experience spirituality as we do? Are they religious? Are they aware of the happenings of their lives and capable of introspection? If so, how can we nurture and encourage these feelings in our pets?

In the article, Jane Goodall is mentioned. She wrote a paper on Primate Spirituality in which she said: “If the chimpanzee could share his feelings and questions with others, might these wild elemental displays become ritualized into some form of animistic religion? Would they worship the falls, the deluge from the sky, the thunder and lightning — the gods of the elements? So all-powerful; so incomprehensible.”

Perhaps some psychic insight would be best to answer these questions. Feel free to chime in!

    Hi,
I had an amazing experienc at the zoo once. (Steve Irwins Australian Zoo) i went and fed the elephants (wich I absolutly love) after feeding it, it just stared right into my eyes very deeply for about 20 secs. The experience was so powerful that I became overwhelmed with emotion. now when I see anything on telly, mags, photos etc I actually start crying. I just cant stop. Its so amazing yet confusing. Has anyone any idea why these feelings are so strong. Im going over to Bali for a holiday to be part of them.
Another thing was that the elephant just left his trunk hovering over my hand while that powerfull eye contact took place.
    Thank you
    Bless you,
    Steph

I adopted a Cocker Spaniel from a shelter. The way I got him was crazy, as I was supposed to be getting a different dog. The shelter told me he was an old dog that nobody wanted. It turned out that he was a puppy. I kept him anyway, and he is very sweet but very strange. He sees ghosts and screams every morning if left alone in the bedroom. I can’t figure out what he sees or why it comes to him and not my other dogs. My late husband loved Cockers and never had one of his own. I truly believe he sent this one to me, but I know he would never frighten him. I can’t figure out what spirit is scaring him and why.

Have you thought of a breed? A Shih Tzu might be perfect for you to have on your lap while doing readings. They were originally bred as Tibetan temple guards. Unlike the Rottweiler which protected the Romans through brute force (and can also make a great pet) the Shih Tzu guarded the temple by maintaining a certain state of consciousness – a far more effective method. ; )

    Hi Miss Krystal,
I hope you find your puppy soon, or as the case may be, that your puppy finds YOU!! Any puppy would be very happy in your home.

    Hi GR,
I agree with you 100%. I happen to love elephants….they are one of my most favorite animals. I was watching a video recently of an elephant who had given birth to her baby in a zoo. After its birth, the baby was lying limp, unresponsive. That mother frantically tried to revive her baby. She continued to pick it up in her trunk and drop it down to the ground, lovingly grasped its trunk, and caressed it until the baby finally took its first breath. The mother was extremely aware of what was going on, and her spiritual connection to her baby was strong enough to keep her from giving up.
Hope everything’s going great with you!!! All’s well here. 🙂
    HUGS, Fran

I have been wanting to get a puppy.
But this puppy will be different. I am going to try and put the baby puppy on my lap, when I am doing readings-I feel it will open up her own “6th sense”-as well as bond with me and who I am. Hey, they have psychic kids, why not psychic dogs? I will keep you posted. Great article. Thanks.

    Hi,
I’m not sure of the extent of a pet’s introspection, but I do believe that they live in a multidimensional world where they do certainly see spirits and their ability to be present and feel unconditional love is unmatched by us humans (unfortunately).

    Hi,
I do believe that animals, more than others, possess a sense of spirituality that closely follows their own emotions and self-preservation.
An excellent example of this is elephants….elephants will actually stand over a dead member of the herd and grieve over a lost herd member for days at a time.

A close friend of mine owns a dog that was rescued from a house fire. The dog attempted to pull her master out of the house but failed. The dog is extremely sweet but to this day carries with her a palpable sadness. She is a black lab. I will only refer to the quote from the old testament. “Man has no pre-eminence over the animals, for all is vanity”

    Hi,
Dean Koontz has written books about his beloved pet dog and how spiritual her life was.
I do believe our pets are very aware of the happenings in their lives and are very capable of introspection. Further, I believe that very young and infant pets are just as happy and secure with routine and schedules they can count on as human toddlers.
