6 Steps to Regret-Proof Your Life

Many of us have things we have done that we wish we would not have. This lesson shows us to let go of those regrets and live your life.

Create a Future Without Past Regrets

If you’re tired of looking back and feeling badly about the decisions you’ve made, things you’ve said, people you’ve dated or goals you’ve set, you’re not alone. And what better time than the beginning of the year for turning over a new leaf. After all, while you’ll always make mistakes on occasion, and you certainly can’t change the past, you can ensure yourself a future without regret!

1. Listen to Your Gut

We’re all blessed with intuition. Even if we’re not psychic, we have instant reactions to people, questions and situations. It sounds so simple, but listening to that inner voice is the key to looking back on life with a sense of completion rather than nagging regrets. Learn to listen when you sense what’s good (or bad) for you, even if you don’t “know” it intellectually. Translation: does a date make you feel uncomfortable or nervous excitement? Does the prospect of a job bring about eagerness or dread? There’s a difference. Don’t talk yourself out of your instincts.

2. Put Yourself First

It may seem counterintuitive to act with your own best interest in mind as opposed to someone else’s, but the biggest cause for regret is not making yourself happy. I wish I’d tried that. I wish I made more time for this… While a common mistake is to think you should put yourself last, if you’re truly acting from a place of your own highest good, it will be what’s best for everyone. In other words, if you’re a happy parent/lover/worker/friend, you’ll perform better in those roles and be much more present in them!

3. Accept Responsibility for Your Life

Do you keep finding yourself in the same predicament over and over again? Instead of looking outside for blame, ask yourself what each of these situations have in common. Odds are, it’s you! The universe responds to our energy. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Thus, if you’re always broken hearted or can’t keep a job, you’re definitely playing a role in it—even if it’s unconscious. By accepting this fact—and working to recognize and improve upon your weaknesses—you’ll not only feel more in control, you’ll be less likely to recreate bad situations.

4. Don’t Be Afraid to Change Course Sometimes

Just because you’ve sorted yourself out once, doesn’t mean you won’t have to do it again. Life is a series of adjustments and you need to react when factors change. If you’re more concerned with the time/money/emotion you’ve invested in someone/something than you are with your own happiness, you’re not doing anyone any favors. After all, you know the definition of insanity—doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results!

5. Speak Your Mind

You probably know the feeling—you hold in your feelings forever until you explode, saying something sarcastic, sharp or just down right mean. Either that or you crumble into a miserable mess, wondering what the hell’s got you feeling so overwhelmed. Going forward, resolve to speak your mind—at the moment you feel it needs expressing (or at least as soon as you can process it into words that make sense). By voicing your emotions in a timely fashion, you’ll be less likely to say the wrong thing later—or regret saying nothing at all.

6. Know Who to Trust for Advice—and Take It!

Lastly, no human being is an island. And when you’re faced with important issues—or smaller day to day stuff that somehow seems overwhelming, it’s important that you know who to turn to for advice. Sometimes, especially when we’re just starting out on the path to self awareness, it’s easy to lose sight of what’s important, but the right confidant can help assess your situation and keep you on the path to a life fully lived—without regrets!
