Saturn Turns Retrograde

As the titan of karma and commitment turns retrograde, from January 13 through May 29, it’s time to review and solidify your commitments and goals. This is not the time to take on new long-term projects, but to strengthen the ones you’ve been working on. This is especially true because Mars, the planet of action, is also retrograde (through March 10). That’s a lot of backtracking over old stuff.

Relationships and legal agreements are particularly under fire because Saturn is transiting through Libra (through April 6), the sign of love, partnerships, justice and equality. Then on April 7, Saturn transits back into Virgo, making it difficult to undertake any long-range plans pertaining to health and work, like sticking to a diet or finding a permanent job.

Yeah, we hear your groans of discouragement. Be patient. Use this time to get clear about your direction. You can also make a list of the activities you need to pursue, after Saturn turns direct, of course, in order to build a solid foundation in your love life, career, spiritual beliefs and/or health — whatever needs strengthening in your life.

Relationship Commitment, Take 2
So you’re in love with someone new and you want to take it to the next level. You might want to wait until after Saturn turns direct on May 30, because if you commit to a relationship now, chances are you’ll have to undertake a major commitment revision later this year. Perhaps you realize that this relationship isn’t for you, or maybe you’re still carrying a torch for a former flame that keeps you from fully connecting to your new partner. Whatever the problem is, you’ll need to make some adjustments in order to move forward.

On the other hand, retrograde Saturn favors discussing your views about commitment and what it means to you (monogamy, anyone?) and how you intend to get there (shared activities? living together? marriage?). What’s more, this influence can also help you learn from your past relationships so you don’t have to experience the same lessons with someone new.

If you’re already in a solid relationship, it’s time to strengthen your bond. You might consider renewing your vows in front of friends and family (or just between the two of you). At the very least, discussing how far your relationship has come along, and where you’d like to go from here, will deepen your connection — and perhaps bring up some issues that need to be resolved.

Boundary Reality-Check
Retrograde Saturn can also test your boundaries. If you’ve been putting up with a person or situation that’s pulling you in the wrong direction, a turning point will likely occur that makes it abundantly clear that you need to start saying ‘no’ — and mean it. The famous line from Network, “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore!” is a prompting from retrograde Saturn (and retrograde Mars, too, for that matter).

Saturn’s Blessings
As the planet of responsibility, limitation and longevity, Saturn is one of those things in life that’s seldom fun, but is crucial to your everyday existence. Without it, you’d have no structure from which to actualize your dreams, no meaningful work, no sense of responsibility or accomplishment and no desire to commit to a relationship. So use this retrograde period to clarify and strengthen your goals, commitments and boundaries, which will help you realize your potential and fulfill your destiny.
