You Can Be an Old Soul, Too

You hear it all the time: “That person is an old soul.” It’s generally a reference made about a man, woman, or child that seems to be wise beyond their years. It’s widely believed that old souls are people who have lived many lifetimes and, based solely on those many past life experiences, have learned valuable lessons or truths that they utilize in their present lifetime.

With that said, I have a slightly different view on the subject. Over the years I have come into contact with many people whom I believe were reincarnated literally dozens of times, but they do not seem to remember or accept information regarding any of their past lives. I have also met those who have been reincarnated only a few times and seem to remember details of those lives or at least recognize that they may have emotional baggage that they cannot relate to events in their present life.

Those who refuse to recognize even the possibility that past lives may be affecting their present life are not necessarily old souls just because they have lived many lives, and those who have only lived a few lives, but accept this truth, are not necessarily young souls who lack spiritual maturity. They may actually be old souls!

Why? I believe that it’s because old souls are wise souls. They’re souls who’ve used each lifetime as an educational tool. They purposefully tried to move forward or graduate to a new level in each lifetime.

Think of it this way. Anyone can cheat their way through a high school algebra course by copying another students work, but at the end of the year, when it is time to take the final exam, they will fail miserably and have to repeat the lesson. They didn’t really learn anything. Continuing to do the same thing over and over again simply makes you an old student without a diploma, not a wise one. Graduation takes work.

The question is, “Do you want to be just an old soul or a wise soul?” If you choose the latter it is never too late, and you are never too old to make changes.

Here are my suggestions:

1. Recognize that life is all about learning. There are lessons presented to you everyday. Lessons in patience; lessons in compassion and empathy; lessons in giving and taking; and most of all, lessons in love. Pay attention to what makes you feel good without making others feel badly and you are on the right track.

2. Remember that right and wrong are relative to cultural and individual situations. Try not to judge. Simply accept the fact that everyone is on their own path. Everyone is busy dealing with their own spiritual lessons. Even amazing powers of persuasion cannot change people who do not wish to change, so focus on what you can change… you!

3. Pursue spiritual education. Read books; attend seminars; get intuitive advice; seek out people, things and activities that resonate a loving vibration. Everyone’s truths are unique. Seek out spiritual practices that feel right for you. Everyone needs something to believe in to feel complete in any lifetime.

4. Recognize and accept the emotional baggage that you cannot connect or trace back to an event in your present lifetime may be from a past life. Explore this fact and do your best to release any guilt or trauma you may have experienced from a past life. In doing so you will move towards better health and healthier relationships.

5. Forgive, for your own sake, and seek to make all encounters with humans and animals a positive one for all parties. In other words, try your best not to do anything that you will need to seek forgiveness for. If you err, then remember to try and set things right and most of all forgive yourself and move forward.

Good luck on your path in this lifetime and more!

    Greetings Josie-
Thank you so very much for this very helpful article! I agree completely that when people use the term “old” soul they are really implying wisdom. Far too many people incarnate more often than necessary due to failing to really learn what they set out to learn in any given lifetime. I adore the analogies used to help explain this phenomenon.
I also feel that there is a misconception that for one to be a “old” soul in the wise sense, then their incarnation will be all peace and love. I have in fact found that more often than not the opposite is true. I find that the majority of truly wise souls will often choose a very challenging, difficult, often traumatic set of life experiences. I do not feel that these people are somehow being punished for being “bad” in prior incarnations, but rather the “older” a sould gets, the more intense and varied the “learning experience” must be. These souls will often have what i refer to as a life of polarity, the bad is severe…but so to are the good aspects of the lifetime.
Thank you so much for putting this info into the universe…you wise one you!
    Brightest Blessings,
    Morgana )O(
