Holistic Uses of Flowers and Herbs

As the growing season approaches the earth beckons us to dig in it, to plant our gardens, to bring our bodies close to nature and Mother Earth. And while not everyone has a green thumb, the plants shared in this article are friendly, forgiving, and easy to grow, so set your trepidation aside, grab your gardening gloves, and dig in. And no worries if you don’t have a yard; all of these plants can be grown in containers, on balconies, and even indoors. But wait! Should none of this appeal to you, you can find each of these plants already harvested and ready to be used in the herbs and spices sections of most natural food stores.

Aloe Vera

While this beautiful succulent is known for its ability to sooth skin, it has many other uses. It brings protection and good luck and guards against evil influences. Dry and crumble it into a powder and use it in a sachet or place a small piece of the leaf in your herb bundle. Plant it on the grave of a deceased loved one, including your pets, and it bestows peace. If you grow it, remember that it needs very little water to thrive. It’s a cactus so keep its feet dry and give it plenty of light (south or southwest window if grown indoors).

Basil

We think of basil as a kitchen condiment, but it has many uses beyond seasoning your pasta sauce! It’s said to sooth tempers and to create harmony between people. It’s regularly used in love spells all over the world as it heals relationships, soothes communication, and strengthens love. It brings prosperity and love when planted in gardens; it can be dried and added to sachets and incense, and placed on windowsills, door frames, and in cash registers or wallets to attract business and money. If you’re going to grow it in your garden, it needs moist soil and six to eight hours of direct sunlight to thrive.

Calendula/Marigolds

This cheerful flower comes in all sizes and shapes and is a gardener’s best friend. It’s extremely hardy, always happy, and beyond versatile in its many uses. It loves full sun as long as its roots stay moist, and will prolifically flower spring, summer, and fall. You can use the fresh flowers in bouquets and the dried flowers in arrangements and floral crafts. When tucked under your pillow the flowers bring prophetic dreams; they increase psychic abilities and the dried petals may be used to consecrate sacred items. The Norse Goddess Freya loves marigolds and they have been used in love rituals for centuries. The flowers are classified as edible but be cautious. The taste is spicy and strong, so use sparingly, and only if you’ve grown them yourself organically.

Lavender

This gorgeous purple flowering plant is not just beautiful and prolific, its fragrance invokes peace and ecstasy. Wear the flowers or essential oil for meditation and contemplation, to draw love, to ease the fear of aging, and to induce sleep. It can be used fresh or dried in bouquets and flower arrangements, and when added to your bath invokes deep relaxation and releases fears. It grows in direct sun and likes its feet dry, and soil unfertilized. It grows abundantly when it’s happy and it is among the easiest and most forgiving of plants, preferring to be neglected rather than coddled.

Mugwort

Mugwort is actually considered a weed by many, but that old saying, “The only difference between a flower and a weed is judgment” certainly holds true with this plant. It likes sun and does not like to be over-watered or overfed. Mugwart tea enhances divination and can be used to wash, cleanse, and dedicate your sacred tools and objects. Bound in bundles with sage it is used to purify space. If placed under your pillow it brings prophetic dreams and keeps you safe from dark influences.

Rosemary

Like basil, rosemary is well known as a culinary herb, but it has a long history of being used to stimulate memory, strengthen mental acuity, and improve concentration. You can use the essential oil in your hair or hair conditioner, and in more ancient times it was braided into student’s hair to help them ace their exams. It may also be dried and used to smudge spaces for purification, similar to sage. It’s very easy to grow, loves direct sunlight, and dry feet; regular pruning keeps it thriving and happy.

Sage

Another culinary herb that is easy to grow and has many uses beyond seasoning our food. Sage prefers lots of sun, well drained soil, repels pests, and has a long growing season. Most of us have used it to smudge and cleanse our space and sacred objects. It can also be made into a tea and used to increase longevity, wisdom, and self-esteem. It provides safety for children, so tuck a sprig in the backpack or lunchbox of your favorite little munchkins.

Tea Recipes

An easy way to benefit from the spiritual properties of these many herbs is to make them into teas. Here are a few recipes that you can easily make at home with the herbs that you have grown yourself.
