The Power of the Autumn Equinox

Fall Into Transformation

This year, the Autumn Equinox will fall on Sept. 23. Normally it’s on Sept 22, but this is the year of transformation… so everything’s slightly different!

Scientifically, the definition of these event is simple: The earth has two equinoxes a year: one in Spring, the other in Autumn. These events herald in the beginning of that particular season. These are the only two times in the year when the daylight and nighttime hours are virtually equal. From Spring to Summer the days grow longer and then begin to shorten as the Autumnal Equinox approaches. After the 23rd of September, the daylight hours will progressively shorten.

Some people may think that the connection of such events is really outmoded in our “high tech” world. However, nothing could be further from the truth!

Your body is aware of the changes, even when your mind may be focused on all the electronic stimulation it can hold. There may be a quick rush of cool air that seems to come up from nowhere or a scent of the fallen leaves as your foot steps on these quiet reminders of the seasons, but your body and spirit will quickly begin to pick up on the signs of the changing seasons.

Depending on what part of the planet you reside you may also notice that it might begin to be a bit harder to wake up in the mornings. The good news is that you will also probably be able to turn your clock back soon and enjoy that extra hour of sleep! Nature has a way of reminding us that we are never too far away from Her!

This year, try something different to herald in this special day. Make a soup of root harvest vegetables (beets or potatoes) and have a “Welcome Autumn” picnic. Find out when the exact moment of the Autumn Equinox will enter into your part of the country and take a moment to reflect on the changing seasons. Everything in your life goes through “seasons” in one way or another and it is important to slow down, consider the bigger picture.

Relationships go through seasons: the sweet flirtations of “spring,” the fire and passion of “summer,” the gentle comfort of “autumn” then the cold silence of “winter”… and if the relationship is built to last, “spring” will beckon again. If not, enjoy the seasons that warmed your heart and your memories will remain beautiful.

As humans, we age in seasons, too. We are young and silly in the “springtime,” bold and fiery in “summer,” content and reflective in “autumn” and if we have lived our journeys well, we are ready for the silence of “winter.” In each “season,” we need not long for the seasons that have passed, but rather cherish the new season as it enters our line of sight and rejoice for another experience, another adventure!

This autumn, write a poem. Read a book you had long promised that you would read. Call an old friend and catch up on the latest news instead of group e-mailing through some social network. Autumn has deep roots and it is time to find and reflect on some of your own feelings. Gather some friends together and have a Harvest Open House party before the festivities of Halloween usher in the holiday seasons and we lose track of such special moments as this. As Faith ext. 9608 says, “Recognize and share your gifts. It not only brings confidence and success to you, but empowers others as well.”

Autumn serves to remind us all that time will never wait, and neither should we. Cherish the season! Enjoy the cool, crisp days of Autumn and bring together that which provides you with comfort and peace. This one perfect moment of balance, this Equinox, is a time for preparing for what lies ahead while reflecting and honoring that which has passed.

“Letting go brings you into balance aligning you with your true self.  It is the most natural experience on earth to let go of what is hurting you.  Letting go frees your mind of the attachment, thereby filling you with peace.” —Faith ext. 9608
