Staying Calm With Holiday Pressure

Well, tis the season! You know…THE SEASON…to be cheery and celebratory all the time! Oh all the music to put us in the spirit of things, all the lights and parties. All the shopping and card mailing, all the card getting from everyone’s expanding families. The fun never ends!

Okay I don’t want to be a Grinch, though green is my favorite color, but I think part of why people get down during the holidays (yours truly included) is all the societal expectations to be happy and perfect. To eat cookies till you’re blue in the face only to turn to complete deprivation a week later as the new year begins. Oh the pressure! How do we deal with it?

You can’t completely escape it. I mean it’s not even Thanksgiving and I’m hearing Christmas music everywhere. Decorating can be fun, giving gifts or cards can be really rewarding but here’s the thing, don’t pressure yourself.

The holidays are about Spirit more than anything. Be good to others and be good to yourself! Put yourself on your nice list…well heck, naughty too, we all need to have some fun. Do what you can and don’t stress if it’s not a magical Technicolor holiday. After all, It’s a Wonderful Life was in black and white.

We can all try these tips to stay calm, I will. Surround yourself with friends, invite them over for a pot luck. Remember friends are the family you choose. Rent some movies and chill out, after all a day off is a day off! And have some egg nog! Treat yourself to something that relaxes you. Like a hot bath after braving the stores or your family. So take a time out and remember you’ll have fun, it’ll all be fine, and if not, it’s a new year soon after! Happy Holidays.

Wonderful article, With the holidays here, all of the hustle and bustle accompanying them, I agree it is a time of being in a state if gratitude, peace, reflecting on the things that have brought us the joy and comfort, even if you family and friends are at a distance, it is your time…. enjoy, spoil yourself even if it means a hot bath, candles, chocolate, or may I suggest a glass of wine, good music….Be Happy!!!!
Blessings to you all you are in my thoughts and prayers….

I have to admit I have always found comfort in just the simple little things that holidays are about such as: gingerbread, egg nog, hot chocolate, candy canes, cobbler etc.
I always fill my place with xmas tree scented candles and play holiday music.
For what it is worth, please know that I have seen a lot of people expect way too much during this season. Those are the ones who end up with the holiday blues. Keep it simple and enjoy the
little things that make the holidays so special.
Best advice I can give. Be grateful for what you do have.
    Happy Holidays,
    Miss Krystal

Speakng of ‘cookies’ I have always been curious as to where the tradition of baking cookies came from. We certainly don’t eat a lot of them. I remember baking cookies for weeks before Christmas with my mother. Now, I think it is just the process of baking them, making them look pretty and festive, and the wonderful smell of fresh-baked cookies in the house that really adds to the Joy of Christmas.
Personally, I don’t cook like my mother used to cook. But, I enjoy having friends over. So, I just relax with them and enjoy the time we have together. It really IS about the ‘Spirit of the Season’ and slowing down to remember why we REALLY DO celebrate Christmas! Relax and Enjoy!

    Hi Marie-T….
Very good pointers. I learned a long time ago, that the holidays will be EXACTLY as I choose for them to be.
If I just sit back and permit sadness & stress to play a part, it will.
But if I choose to be happy and joyful, not to mention thankful, I WILL be……and I will take the steps I need to take in order to insure that goal.
    Happy Thanksgiving….Gina Rose ext.9500

    Hi,
The pursuit of perfection during the holidays or the perception that “everyone else” is able to bake, decorate, clean, entertain, work, and wrap the perfect presents for everyone on a budget does create an unrealistic pressure.
I agree-spend time with friends and others important to you in casual celebrations of each other’s company.
