Your Dreams: What Do They Mean?

Most of us associate symbolism with the visual arts, literature, religion, or social/political causes, but we actually encounter symbols everywhere. From the sign for a bus stop to the universal figures representing ladies’ and men’s restrooms, symbols have become a part of our day-to-day lives. So much so that semiotics (the study of signs or symbols and their uses and interpretations) is as widespread in fields as diverse as advertising and Tarot cards. But what do symbols in our dreams mean?

Our subconscious selves also speak to us in symbols while we sleep, and understanding some of the more common dream symbols, or themes, can help us interpret what our “observers on the sidelines” are trying to communicate to us. Sometimes these messages are nothing more than a worry that we are unaware is niggling away in a dark corner of our minds. At other times, our dreams bring us much needed awareness or information that we might not have noticed when our minds are busy with their daily work. And still other times, the messages embedded in our dreams are prophetic, alerting us to events yet to come.

Call me for a custom dream analysis today!

Though dream styles differ from individual to individual, there are a number of widely accepted translations of the frequent dream symbols and themes we often encounter. Here, then, are some definitions to help you understand what your sleeping mind is trying to tell you.

Water

Water is associated with our emotional selves. When dreaming about water, it is important to notice the type of water (lake, river, small brook or huge ocean), as well as its temperament (calm, gentle waves, slightly choppy or raging waves). Are you looking at the water or are you actually in it? Is the water clean, clear and sparkling, or is it murky, silty, brackish or dirty? How deep is the water?

All of these qualities are important to the messages our minds are trying to share. A smaller body of water like a pond or lake would indicate that we are keeping our emotions contained within boundaries. A moving brook or river suggests that we are allowing our emotions to flow. An ocean or sea tells us that our emotions are unbounded. The water’s temperament gives us an assessment of our own emotional states: Are we calm and happy? Do we have a few worries? Or are we facing an emotional storm?

Our proximity to the water also gives us clues about what is going on emotionally. If we are actually in the water, then it is likely that we are allowing ourselves to experience our emotions, while standing outside of the water could signify that we are simply observing our feelings rather than feeling them. If we are in the water and are at risk of drowning, then there is a good chance that we are feeling completely overwhelmed and need to find an emotional life boat.

Nudity

Being naked in front of a crowd is another common scenario in dreamworld. In this type of dream scenario, it’s important to note if we felt comfortable or not. If we’re comfortable it signifies that we are “at home in our own skin,”and comfortable showing our true selves without the protective covering of clothing. If we are embarrassed or ashamed by our nakedness in the dream, it could indicate that we feel exposed, defenseless or unprepared.

Teeth

When people dream about teeth, the theme usually involves losing or breaking teeth. For many, the attractiveness or health of their teeth is crucial to their sense of physical beauty or self-esteem, so losing or breaking teeth would seem to indicate that the dreamer was feeling less than beautiful/handsome, but the symbolism of teeth goes much deeper than that.

Teeth can also indicate major life changes and the loss of a tooth can have positive or negative connotations, depending on the situation. Was the tooth loose before it fell out? If so, it is likely that this change has been developing for some time. If it fell out suddenly, the change was probably unexpected and, if knocked or pulled out, can represent a radical change that we are unable to make on our own and for which we need assistance. Like change (expected or unexpected), the loss of teeth in a dream is not necessarily a negative thing, so it is important to identify our emotional state during the dream.

Being Chased

Being chased is one of the most terrifying dream themes for many people and generally signifies that we are feeling overwhelmed by a situation from which we feel powerless to escape. But we need to keep in mind that this is occurring in our minds and we are not powerless in the waking world. When waking from these dreams, we may feel very anxious or agitated and taking a few deep, slow, deliberate breaths will help put us back into our bodies and leave the unpleasant emotions behind.

Flying

Finally, we have my favorite dream scenario—where I am soaring joyfully, unaided by wings or a plane, over a beautiful landscape. Flying represents freedom, liberation and being in control of ourselves and our lives. If we are flying without interference, the feeling is usually exhilarating and instills a sense of well-being. If there are obstacles to our flight (such as telephone lines), then we need to assess our goals and, perhaps, formulate a new plan.

Feeling fearful while we are flying often indicates a fear of success or transcending our limitations. Occasionally, we might dream of someone trying to prevent us from soaring. In these instances, our dreaming mind is sending a clear message and we need to objectively look at how or why this person is attempting to restrict us.

Wishing you sogni d’oro (golden dreams),

Seren

I have not had many dreams ( That I can Remember ) throughout my life. But, at this time in my life I have been living on my savings ( Which is almost gone ). I have not been able to find work, I was in a very unusual freak accident that has left me living with pain constantly…..I am selling all personal belonging’s to pay my rent. I am alone and have had no luck at meeting a man to share my life with.
I am on dating sites but nothing in four years has happened but one man who was a player and very mean to me when I chose to end the relationship…..! I have had no contact with him in several months.
In the past month I have had two vivid dreams, in color. Now I never dream….The first dream was of two green Snakes ( I hate Snakes ) small thin green snakes and then multitudes of tiny Black spiders crawling all over an unfamiliar room and they seemed to be multiplying right before my eyes. All along the two thin green snakes were just crawling around…! Then last night I had a dream in color I was in a house that I did not recognize and there was a Snake under the bed….when I looked under the bed it looked like a Cobra..with the Fanned out neck and as if it were about to strike…..! I walked away and then looked back under this bed and saw three sweet tiny orange striped kittens in front of this snake.! I only wanted to protect and rescue the kittens….!!! The Snake all the while just in position to strike,,,,and then I woke up but still remember this dream….!! Now I am baffled as to what Snakes mean in a dream ? Where I was in no apparent danger..myself….But why Snakes..?? I am only looking for a good man to love and some financial income before I am homeless …and that time is drawing very close….!! Is there anyone who may shed some light on the Snakes….!! With Love & Light, Kitty

I recently had a dream in which I saw Jesus. I was in a large movie theater, watching some divine documentary about the cosmos & Astrology and such. When on screen it showed the 12 symbols of the zodiac. Then, on screen, a giant hand comes down and with its thumb squishes out only the Aquarius symbol off the corner of the screen! (which I am) … so I lean over and remark to a friend of mine who is sitting in the 3rd seat from the aisle “oh sure, downgrade the Aquarians!’ or something like that. Right then… He just appeared to my left standing in the aisle. He looked normal enough, just as you’d expect like from the sacred heart images but was glowing ever so slightly and had this aura that let me know, like, yeah this is Jesus. He had appeared just to scold me for talking during the movie! He spoke to me, told me to move back to the 1st seat next to the aisle. ???? I can’t make heads or tails of this dream

    Hi Evelyn,

You have an open, questing spirit; however, it seems that you feel there is some restriction that is not allowing you to truly express yourself in a joyous, uninhibited way.

The key to your dream is to identify what situation or relationship in your life has you feeling subdued or repressed and then taking action to change it. I would be happy to look into this for you and help you develop a plan that allows you to dance like no one is watching.

    Greetings, Kim,

It can be very disconcerting to find someone unexpectedly in our ‘space,’ especially someone we do not know.
It seems you have a situation invading your sense of peacefulness or safety that is leaving you feeling helpless, without voice or ability to act.

When you wake from such a dream, take a few slow, deep breaths, remind yourself that you are in a safe space, ask yourself what situation the stranger represents that is causing you to feel powerless, and then listen carefully for the answer.

Remember that our dreams often show us or help us give resolution to situations we feel we cannot handle in our waking lives. I am here to talk and help guide you toward the course of action that will solve this scary situation.

    Wishing you peaceful slumber,
    Seren

    Hi there, Marios,

I am so pleased that my explanations shed a bit of light and understanding on your flying dreams. And how wonderful for you that you possess such an inner sense of liberty! 🙂

It’s also great that you pay attention to and make use of the information coming to you, as you are 100% correct in your statement that big ideas (or understanding) sometimes come to us intuitively.

    Good afternoon, Keshan,

It’s completely understandable that your heart would be beating quickly after having such an unsettling dream. Perhaps it is trying to tell you that you need to let your young man know of your feelings before he moves forward with someone else.

Even if it turns out that he does not reciprocate your feelings, taking a risk and letting him know is a far more effective course of action than saying nothing and risking feeling hurt or angry.

    Good luck!

    Hi Gagan,

Thanks for your question. Unfortunately, without knowing more of the details of the dream, all I can give you is a very general response. Dreaming of a boy coming toward you can quite literally mean that you are going to, or wish to, meet a male who is going to be quite important to you and your life.

How and why and the nature of the relationship could very well be given to you in the other significant dream details.

    Greetings, Patty,

That can be a really unnerving experience. Another one is when, just as I am falling asleep, I hear someone yell out my name. It jerks me rudely back into full consciousness but, of course, no one is there… it’s just my subconscious self trying to get my attention and make me aware of something, the same as your slamming door experiences.

If you can, try to recall what you were dreaming about when this happens and see if there is some pattern to the messages.

    Miss D: Exactly!

Our subconscious minds give us messages or insights or warnings or clarity that our waking minds are too busy to notice or fully integrate. By keeping a log of our dreams, we are able to notice recurring themes or even reference back to when something we have dreamt transpires.

Thank you for your kind words and keep journaling! You might just find that you have info to share that will help someone. 🙂

Without knowing all of the details of the dream, it is not possible for me to give you a more specific interpretation; however, I can tell you that dreaming of falling from a great height can indicate some sort of disappointment, but it can also tell us that we fear taking a fall of some sort.

    Hi Merlyn,

While there are some general, basic definitions for different dream symbols, many times the message of the dream is composed by so much more than just one focal point.

In the case of people who visit us in Dreamland, we also need to take a look at the circumstances, the setting, how we felt, what was said (or not said, for that matter), the environment, their actions and ours…

Sometimes we are just thinking of them, sometimes we need resolution to a situation, and still other times, they are trying to give us a message.

In other words, there is no simple interpretation to answer your question.

I am always available to help you discover the hidden messages in your dreams, when you feel you would like to talk.

Until then, I wish you sogni d’oro,

    Greetings Jose,

While you might not recall your dreams and their messages upon waking, rest assured that you are indeed dreaming.

One little trick I use when I am in particular need of a clear answer to a question or guidance for a concern is, once I am in bed and settling down to sleep, to “instruct my mind” that I will clearly remember and understand the messages given to me that night in my dreams.

It has never failed to work for me.

Perhaps you can use this method to, first, remember your dreams and then, once you are recalling them with regularity, understand the messages with which they are gifting you.

    Happy dreaming!

I’ve had a very strange reoccuring dream. In my dream-I’m watching a rat eat a worm. But when it gets to the end of the worm-the worm suddenly transforms into a large snake and swallows the whole rat. Does anyone have any idea what it means or signifys? Please let me know if anyone has a clue as I’m very perplexed. Thankyou.

I dreamt that my boyfriend was near a creek and for some reason went into it. I saw crocodile and tried to warn him but he ignored me. As he entered and attracted the attention of this croc.,a huge snake or likeness of one also proceeded to attack him. I couldn’t help him or watch. As I turned to walk away he was screaming but I just kept walking until I no longer heard him. I then woke up. Can you explain to me the meaning of this.

Astounding! I have recurring dreams that I’m flying, but my best friend tries to hold me down
on the ground to keep me from the dangers of the sky. Also, I dream about water and am
feeling desperate to jump in the water, but am prevented from doing so. I also have dreams
where my entire teeth are coming out of my mouth, they are loose and then I touch them and
they fall out in my hands. At the present time in my life, I feel ‘paralyzed’ and seem unable to
move forward. I want to travel and be carefree, but my responsibilities to friends and family
hold me ’emotional hostage’. Hopefully when my best friend returns, that will alleviate some of
the feelings of being ‘trapped’ by my home and the responsibilities within it. One good dream
I have is that I am in a mall and find myself ‘naked’ but I don’t give a damn, am encouraging
everyone else to get naked as well. Thanks for the insights about dreams.

    Hello Seren:)

Thanks for this article about decoding our dreams.

I find my dreams to be quite interesting, and do keep a seperate journal or doing just that, decoding some of my most profounding dreams. Dreams that can lead to as you break it down …helpful, waking lessons for myself.

It’s interesting reading this because it maybe something lying dormant withn the subconscious mind directing us to manifest our desires, successes and or to maybe conquer and understand some fears one may have.

I have vivid dreams, more like a vision or a slideshow of a specific situation and person. The first vivid vision delivered the same specific message two nights in a row, and it came true. The second vision appeared in my dreams at the same time every night, as a fast slideshow, and slowed down for only a few seconds on the same unknown woman over a two month period. The next Friday at a sports bar, a woman whom I never met before called-out my name, I was beguiled by her beauty, almost sick to my stomach–in a good way. That night in my dreams I had the same slideshow vision, only this time the unknown woman was revealed as the woman that I had just met! I dated her for two years.
