New Year’s Resolutions: Don’t Give Up! Face Your Fears

If I could swoop in and save you from procrastinating one more day in achieving your goals, I would. If I could call you to say “I know you can do this!” I would do that, too. If I could wake you up each day to start that new life, I’d be there by your side with inspiration in hand. However, there are many more of you than there are minutes in a day. So consider this your friendly, loving smack upside the head that means “Get with it, and get on with your life. You’re worth it!”

Resolutions are always created with the best of intentions. You’ve thought hard about what it is about you that needs improvement or change. You’ve carefully planned how you will achieve the goals, and even made sure your goals were realistic. However, many of us (including me) can become distracted, disappointed and deterred from our goals – be it New Year’s resolutions or any other kind of resolution.

Change causes panic. It can be scary and can create fear. Why? Only you know that answer, but here is some insight and guidance that might help. You might want to take each question and journal about it. Also, you might want to talk with a psychic advisor to help see through any blind spots or blockages.

What’s Stopping You?

For me, I wanted to feel better about myself, and that included losing weight. However, when I tried to lose weight, I found that I had tons of issues with food. Finally, I asked myself each time I reached for food, “Do I really want this?” and “Why am I eating this?” The insight I gained was eye-opening! It allowed me to come to terms with the real issue at hand – I was an emotional eater. Once I got to the root of the issue, I was able to work with it and move on. I’m well on my way to meeting my weight-loss goals.

What Roadblocks Are You Creating?

When my company recently moved to a new building near a bunch of yoga studios, I resolved to go to a class at least once a week. My expectation was to go during the week after work. However, I kept forgetting to look up schedules and so on. Why was I putting up roadblocks to achieving a simple goal? After a bit of research and soul-searching, I realized that most of the classes were later in the evening, I would get home late at night and there wouldn’t be time to eat before class. Getting home tired and hungry doesn’t sound reasonable to me. However, I can still meet my goal and go to a class on the weekend!

Why Are You Procrastinating?

When we really fear something, we tend to put it off – even it’s for our own good. Know this: it takes more energy to fear something than to actually face it. One of my goals was to write more. I enjoyed writing fiction and non-fiction alike. I read books on how to write, bought a fancy journal and a new pen and I even set aside time to write. However, I didn’t. Sound familiar? After some soul-searching on this one, I found that I was afraid that no one would like what I had to say. Immediately my mind/ego answered back, “Then why are you writing if not for yourself?” So, I started writing for myself and really enjoyed it. So much so that I even got a job as a full-time writer and editor. When I finally faced that fear, it was like stepping out of the depths of a murky swamp and being able fly. I no longer slogged around fearing my goal. I soared.

Find Your Faith

I say this very lovingly, “Get up off that tush, and go get your life!” As I’ve learned, no one but you will be held accountable for your life. Know that we are all rooting for you, and that you have the strength, intelligence and passion to achieve your goals. Get inspired, and get on with your life!

    Hi Holly,
Nice article…..I agree especially with the procrastinating fear factor……I’ve always said that fear is our biggest ” crippler ” and our worst enemy. Once you can overcome your fear, about anything in life, you can achieve anything.

I liked your saying : “Get up off that tush, and go get your life!” Because it’s so very true.

    Hi Holly Allender,

Thanks for sharing a good article.

My view is in case you are really convinced about the goal you have choseen to achieve then you should go ahead and pursue to achieve the goal with focussed efforts of excellence and even if you fail one should not quit since most of the successful personalities learnt form their failures and finally emerged victorious in life. It is better to fail than not to try since there is a class of people who do not try for the fear of failure.

    rgds,
