The Hermit Crab and the Holiday Blues

Hermit Crab Holiday Blues

Shake the Holiday Blues

The holidays can be a fun and wonderful time—a time to reconnect with friends and family, give gifts and share with the people you love. However, for many the holidays can be a challenging time emotionally. The card of the ‘Hermit” tends to show up often in my readings as the holidays approach. Perhaps being around family brings back old dynamics that make you feel bad. Perhaps you don’t have any family or live too far away to be with them. Or maybe it’s the cold weather and the shorter days. For many, all that goodwill and cheer can feel like pressure. So here are some ideas that may help you shake those holiday blues.

Make Something for Yourself

Creativity feeds the soul and focuses the mind. You don’t have to be Picasso or Georgia O’Keefe to make something awesome! Pick something you’ve always wanted to learn how to make. Soap! Beer! Bread! Jewelry! Leather stamping! Painting! Knitting! You get the picture. If you’re still stuck, go down to your local craft or hardware store, or checkout YouTube and find something you’d like to learn how to do and do it!

Make Something for Other People

Don’t stop there! It’s great to make things for ourselves, but it’s just as wonderful to make things for other people. Cut that soap up and wrap the bars individually in something you’ve designed. You can design a label for that microbrew you made and give a bottle to all your coworkers! Hand paint some holiday cards. Most of us love getting something homemade. Somehow it always means more to us.

Throw a Dinner Party

Gathering a few friends for a nice evening at your home can be some of the best medicine around. It doesn’t have to cost you much either. You can make spaghetti and meatballs, throw together a salad and ask guests to bring dessert and drinks. This isn’t a holiday party. It’s a casual dinner party.

Host a Potluck

Lots of people have nowhere to go for the holidays. Throw a potluck! Invite people in you community and people you work with. It’s a wonderful time to reach out to people you’d like to get to know better. You’d be surprised how much fun you’ll have and how many new friends you’ll make. All those people will have a great time and be truly grateful to have some place to be on those holidays.

Avoid Social Media

Limit how much time you spend on social media. Social networks can be great for connecting but they can also sometimes skew how we perceive ourselves and other people. We can be fooled into feeling as if everyone else’s lives are so much better than our own, but they’re not really. Most of us try to show our best selves on social networks and we should. But there are times when it’s better just to turn it off. The last thing you need is a continual feed of everyone else’s fabulous families, fabulous parties and fabulous outfits because their lives are no more fabulous than yours, even when it doesn’t always feel that way.

Watch Something Funny

Laughter is the greatest healer there is! On those nights when there’s no alternative but to be on your own, watch funny things. Watch movies starring your favorite comedians. Watch anything that makes you laugh and reminds you that life has absurdities. That is a beautiful thing!

Gratitude

The most important thing you can do to beat the holiday blues, while doing all these other things, is to remind yourself of what you are grateful for. Gratitude is a powerful healing and balancing force. When you focus on what you have, rather than what you lack, you emanate the energy of abundance. And the truth is we all have something to be grateful for!

    Hi Chloe,

Really liked this article, all very true points !

I like the craft idea…one of these days , when I can find the time, I want to take a pottery class .

Liked the part about laughter too !!! I confess, I DO watch silly comedy movies on TV to unwind. In fact, I just watched Bedazzled last night on TV, Elizabeth Hurley was hysterical in that movie where she played the devil….lol

    Happy Holidays, Chloe !

    Blessed Be )O(
