It’s a constant choice you have to make moment by moment: to be positive about life or be negative. You probably won’t jump for joy if you’re fired from your job or you get dumped by your partner, but choosing to look at the upside to a challenge will help you find contentment.

3. Stay in the Moment
Being satisfied with where you’re at means staying grounded in the current moment. Thinking about mistakes you’ve made in the past, circumstances that didn’t go your way, or worrying about what’s to come, all keep you in a constant state of distress. On the flip side, focusing on the present moment will give you the freedom to feel a sense of peace and contentment too.

4. Limit Your Time on Social Media
To compare is to despair and, unfortunately, we all have constant access to the best comparison tools around—namely, Facebook, Instagram, and celebrity news sites. When you have constant reminders of the fun everyone else is having, the opportunities others have that you don’t, and photos that showcase it all, it can be a major challenge to feel contentment. However, cutting down on the time you spend scrolling through social media and reading the news can help you put the focus right back on where it belongs—on you.

5. Reach Out to Those Less Fortunate
If all else fails, try walking a mile in someone else’s shoes—or at least get a close look at what it would mean to not have enough in your life, whether it’s food, money or shelter. By volunteering and meeting people who have it harder than you, you’ll soon learn that your problems are minor in comparison. Plus, when you see how grateful and appreciative people who have next to nothing can be, you’ll likely get a necessary wake-up call that it doesn’t take much to find contentment.
