Be Your Own Goddess

Tap Into Your Goddess Energy and Express Yourself

At least one goddess figure is present in most cultures and myths, including the Blessed Mother in Christianity; Demeter, the Earth Mother, in Greek mythology; Guanyin (or Kwanyin) in Chinese mythology; the anima in Jungian psychology; the Egyptian High Priestess Isis; and The Empress, card number three in the major arcana of tarot decks. In most cases, the goddess is the archetype for love and mercy, balanced with wisdom. She accesses the power of love from within, by trusting her intuition.

You can be your own goddess by tapping into your personal capacity to give and receive love. If you don’t know how to get started, here are some tools and rituals that can spark your inner feminine divinity.

Welcoming the Sun

Psychic Tisha ext. 5145 discovered a morning ritual that helps her and her daughters experience more peace and calmness throughout the day. Before rushing off to school, they walk down to the water’s edge at a local lake. “As the sun comes up over the reeds, we take a deep breath in, breathe in the sun and say, in turn, the things we are thankful for,” Tisha explains. “Then we thank the Goddess and Mother Earth for their blessings.”

Honoring the Moon

If you are more of a night person, Gina Rose ext. 9500 explains that in Wicca, the Triple Goddess is represented as three female powers — Maiden, Mother, and Crone — corresponding to the phases of the moon: waxing, full, and waning.

According to Lori Reid, author of Moon Magic, the maiden goddesses associated with the waxing phase are Aphrodite, Diana, and Freya; their qualities include love, fertility, innocence, creativity, hope, and vigor. The full moon goddesses are Isis, Selene, and Ceres; their qualities include growth, abundance, motherhood, nurturing, and fruition. The goddesses connected to the waning moon are Lilith, Kali, and Hecate; their qualities reflect experience, wisdom, and mysticism.

To enhance your own goddess powers, perform rituals involving candles and chants during the moon phase associated with the qualities that you wish to bring forth.

Meditating With Tarot

If you enjoy tarot cards, you can channel your inner goddess by meditating on The Empress card from your favorite deck. In The Tarot Handbook, author Angeles Arrien suggests invoking help from The Empress when you are stuck in a period of over-giving or inhibiting your emotions; when experiencing motherhood issues; and when you want more harmony, nature, beauty, or receptivity in your life.

Arrien’s sample affirmations include: “I give wisely, and I receive wisely” and “I value the healing power of beauty, harmony, and love.”

Displaying Statuettes

Displaying a statuette of a goddess that you admire is another way to bring forth your own goddess awareness. According to the book Dragons, Gods and Spirits From Chinese Mythology by Tao Tao Liu Sanders, the Chinese Goddess of mercy, Guanyin, was so popular at one time that figurines of her outnumbered figurines of Buddha in homes, shrines, and temples.

In my own family, I witnessed the power of goddess each time that my young niece placed a statuette of the Blessed Mother in a window, facing outside, whenever a big outdoor event was coming up the next day. Without fail, the Blessed Mother answered her prayer for good weather and held back the rain!

Staying Balanced

When developing your own goddess power, it is important to maintain balance, focusing on the power of love, rather than the love of power, warns Sallie Nichols, author of Jung and Tarot: An Archetypal Journey. The Hindu goddess Kali, sometimes referred to as the Terrible Mother, is an accurate depiction of such imbalance; she is often shown devouring a man. Nichols also points out that a similar imbalance occurred in the women’s liberation movement in the 1970s: “Fascinated by power, many women seem to have lost touch with the very feminine creativity which they set out to demonstrate.”
