Couples Bucket List: 7 Drops in the Bucket

As far as anyone knows, the idea of a “Bucket List” comes from the 2007 hit movie of the same name, starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. The basic idea is to fill our buckets with all the most wonderful moments in life, so that when it is finally kicked from our feet, we can be truly satisfied in knowing we’ve made the most of our time here on earth.

Well, nobody ever said that these had to be accomplished alone, and I propose a couples bucket list for those who consider themselves more of a dynamic duo than an incredible solo. While many of these lists focus on extravagant trips and once-in-a-lifetime experiences, I want to look at some of the simple pleasures in life that a couple can experience with limited funds. Let the seven drops in the bucket begin…

Drop 1: From Sunset to Dawn

Hike up to the tallest mountain over one afternoon and spend the evening watching the sun set. Stay the night and get up the next morning in time to watch the sun rise. There is something symbolic about witnessing the beginning and end to a day with someone you love.

Drop 2: Party Like It’s 2999!

Part of celebrating life is taking time to immerse ourselves in the celebration of life with a large group of people who truly know how to live life to the max. Burning Man is an annual event in the Black Rock Desert, near Reno, Nevada, where for $300 a ticket (plus whatever else you need to camp out in the desert), you will be treated to a celebration of humanity, creativity, and love.

Drop 3: Learn the Argentine Tango

Most couples use their voices to communicate with each other, but not many have had the pleasure of communicating purely through the motions of their body. The Argentine Tango is about passion, love, and leading from your connection at the heart. This dance has been known to create lasting bonds between couples, without even saying a single word to each other.

Drop 4: Leave a Love Letter for Each Other in an Obscure Book at Your Local Library

Write a love letter to your partner, seal it in an envelope, and place it inside the pages of an obscure book in the farthest, darkest corner of a library. I realize this is a bit cliché, but it is nonetheless a great reminder about your commitment to each other. Set a date when you will both return in 10 to 20 years to give the letters to each other. (Remember to make a note of where you left it.)

Drop 5: Challenge Each Other to Overcome Something You’ve Been Afraid of All Your Life

They say that bonds are created through traumatic experiences, and this has been shown time and again. One of the best things about being a part of a dynamic duo is that you no longer have to face your fears alone. There’s always somebody to push you past your greatest barriers (at least there should be). If you haven’t experienced this feeling in a while, perhaps it’s time for a refresher.

Drop 6: Do a Home Renovation Project Together

You may never know each others’ darkest halves until you have had the chance to build shelves, put in a new sink, or install wood flooring together. It’s funny how a lot of couples who have done this say that they never would again… but if you approach it as a team, the experience will teach you patience, compromise, and understanding. If you can get through this, you can get through anything!

Drop 7: Have a “Couples” Portrait Painted by a Non-Famous Artist

Photos are a wonderful keepsake, but couples portraits can express a special meaning behind a relationship that can’t always be depicted in a mere photo. Find an artist who is interested in taking the time to get to know you as a couple, so that the final keepsake will hold a special memory and meaning behind your spiritual union.

These were only meant to get your cog wheels turning in order to create your own personal couples bucket list. If you died tomorrow and the highlights of your life flashed before your eyes, would you be satisfied with how you’ve chosen to spend your time with your soulmate? If your answer is no, then it’s time to start thinking about how to change that destiny.
