You Don’t Know How to Pick Them

According to the Journal of Marriage and Family, one particular study suggests that heart disease complications are lowest in both men and women who have never been married. And here’s the kicker: It is not the marriage that breaks your heart—it is the problems that go along with it, such as divorce, widowing and remarriage. In other words, if you marry the right person, you could have as healthy a heart as your single self. But if you choose poorly, your health will likely suffer. So just keep in mind that being single is not such a bad alternative.

Or, You Let Fear Pick

If you really don’t like being single, you may feel so much anxiety over your situation you overlook certain red flags and settle out of fear of being alone. When this happens, your chance of choosing the wrong partner skyrockets, and you may find yourself stuck in a string of bad relationships.

You’d Prefer to Age Gracefully

Don’t get me wrong—good relationships make people glow. However, according to some studies, marriage also leads to less physical activity which means you could tend to gravitate towards having a less-fit body than you would have if you remained single.

You Prefer Your Own Company

It has long been written that solitude is essential for discovering your own freedom and creativity. Many people can enjoy this kind of self-discovery with a partner, but some cannot. If you’re the kind of person who truly craves the spirituality of your own company, maintaining that commitment to yourself may result in a much happier life filled with more fulfilling memories.

You Want to Maintain Your Independence

Committed relationships cause us to become dependent on our partner, and there are a lot of great things to be said about that. However, single people are more resilient to both injury and disease. Experts are not sure what could be the factor with these findings, but some single men and women seem to endure hardships better when they are facing them alone.

You Like Sleep

While sleeping apart can save your marriage, it is not always an option for everyone. There are a lot of people out there dealing with sleep disorders, and it isn’t fun sleeping next to them. Studies show that the majority of us will sleep our best when we are completely alone (sans pets too). So, in some cases you may actually need to choose between romantic love or fantastic sleep.

You’d Prefer to Stay Debt Free

No matter how you look at it, when you combine the finances of two people, you also combine their debt. And more married people are in debt than single people! Just because one of you is good with money, it doesn’t mean that it will be enough to curb the other person’s bad habits.

You Like Keeping Touch With Friends and Family

For each relationship you start, you will loose two friends. It’s true! A lot of time must go into each relationship to  keep it going. And while some studies suggest that single people are more lonely than those in relationships, that is just not true. In fact, other studies suggest that couples in a committed (married) relationship spend much less time with friends and family than their single counterparts. Researchers suggest that this tendency in couples may have more to do with having less energy to give to other people, which makes sense, considering that love relationships take plenty of work.

I, like many single people, I’m sure, get lonely at times; but…I relate completely to all of your bullet points. Everyone of them describes me. I’ve thought that I’d like to be in a relationship, at times, but my single, independent life, is too strong, and appealing to me!

I’ve never been in a relationship with a human lover. Its just that in my past, so many others always took advantage of me, and some still do today. Most of my friends move away and don’t pay much attention to me. And long distance relationships can be hard. I just think I want to stay single. I like/love my own company most of the time, but when I want company, I’ll seek it out with family or pets.

In my family, most of the single women are either divorced or their hubbies died, and they have come out much stronger for it for their families. And these are all mid-age women, one exception, one elder woman, grandmother.

My grandfather used to say better alone than in bad company. I agree because I am divorced and seem to meet only liars and cheats. I cannot understand why men over their 60s still act like childish fools. Do they not realize you will find out their real age and if they are fooling around with someoneelse.I haved actually begged these men to always be truthful from the very beginning but yet they choose to lie. I give up on finding anyone decent. It is really ashame especially in men over their 60d.

    Hi Eric,

    Loved this article.

Speaking only for myself now…..I love my sleep too. I’m an extremely light sleeper. it must be quiet and pitch dark when I sleep. Every man I’ve ever been with has snored like a freight train…..lol….I’m so glad I’m single !
I do sleep with my dogs though…..lol….none of them snore. They do hog the bed now and then though…lol.

I agree with the debt part too…..I’m very good at handling my money, everything I own is paid off , and, at my age, I do not intend to go into debt again by taking on a partner.

I believe in love ( and marriage ) , but with age, sometimes our needs and priorities change.

And I love my FREEDOM !!!!!! ….don’t have to share the remote with anybody, I cook what I want, or not cook if I don’t feel like it, I go where I want, when I want.

But, different strokes for different folks….for some, marriage is bliss. But for others, we prefer a different path. Neither path is better than the other….it depends upon individual needs and wants.

    Blessed Be )O(
