What is Déjà Vu?
Have you ever had the feeling you were in the exact same place, saying or doing the exact same thing that you’ve experienced before, even though you know you couldn’t have? Just about everyone has had that same eerie yet familiar feeling. It feels more than familiar; it feels like you are the lead character in the movie Groundhog Day, where every day or moment seems to be exactly the same as the one before.
What Does Déjà Vu Mean?
According to Lee Ann Obringer’s “How Déjà Vu Works,” on science.howstuffworks.com, “Déjà vu is a French term that literally means “already seen” and has several variations, including déjà vécu, already experienced; déjà senti, already thought; and déjà visité, already visited. French scientist Emile Boirac, one of the first to study this strange phenomenon, gave the subject its name in 1876.”
Why Do We Experience Déjà Vu?
Some say that perhaps it may be a memory-based experience in the literal sense, but many say it is a psychic experience as well. What if you astral-projected and you really were there before, saying and doing the same things, only now it’s happening while you are in your physical body? What if it’s a spiritual gift, like precognition? What if it is a past-life experience happening again in the here and now? Some say it can be all of these things.
Déjà Vu vs. Precognition
The difference between déjà vu and precognition is that déjà vu is experienced during an event, where it feels like you’ve seen or experienced something before when you know you haven’t. A precognitive experience shows something that will happen in the future, not things you’ve already experienced.
In “The Meaning of Déjà Vu”, an article featured on psychologytoday.com by Judith Orloff, M.D., she explains: “It is a signal to pay special attention to what is taking place, perhaps to receive a specific lesson in a certain area or complete what is not yet finished.”
Déjà Vu Variations
Have you ever walked down a street you’ve never been on before, noticing the many buildings, watching the cars zip by on the busy roads, and the people sauntering along the sidewalk? Did it feel like you’ve been there before, in that exact moment, seeing these very same buildings, cars, and people, even though you knew you hadn’t? This is one of many ways you might experience déjà vu. You could certainly have dreamed this moment the night before.
But what if you are experiencing something more than a dream? Have you met someone for what you consciously knew was the first time, but you felt you knew them so well that you were very comfortable with them? This can be an example of déjà vu too, with someone you’ve “already seen” in a past life. Maybe you’ve met someone, and you knew instantly that you were going to be with them. Perhaps you feel you’ve known them all your life even though you’ve just met. Maybe they were your husband, wife, son, daughter, brother, sister, father, or mother somewhere in the long ago. Drink in these sparkling moments of enchanting recognition and rejoice in them, even if they seem inexplicable.
Déjà Vu and Past Lives
Have you ever been horseback riding in the hills and suddenly saw yourself in a wagon train, wearing pioneer clothes, knowing you’d been on that mountain path before, living a life there in the long ago?
Have you visited another country such as Ireland, Greece, or Japan, but every place you went seemed familiar, comfortable, and homey, even though you knew you’d never been there before?
It’s been said that your talents are abilities you’ve brought over from other lives. This too is a kind of déjà vu, for you already know something without learning it in the usual way. For example, if learning a certain language came all too easily to you, it might have been your dominant language in a past life. Or if you could draw or paint exceptionally well as a child without a bit of training or experience, perhaps you were an artist once. Do you love sailing the open seas? Maybe you were a ship’s captain in centuries past. Are you fascinated with Egypt, the Civil War, or the Middle Ages? These intense interests often point to past lives and a steady feeling of déjà vu experiences.
Déjà Vu is a Gift
Perhaps you’ve had a glimpse of the future, and you know that our world today is still quite primitive, because you’ve already seen that the future is a more peaceful, joyful, and beautiful place.
When you experience déjà vu, that feeling that what you’re currently doing has already happened, it can be unsettling, but it is nothing to fear. Your angels may have shown you something you needed to know before you went through it in order to protect and help you be okay. You are being called into full awareness of where you are in that moment. Allow the euphoric feeling of currently witnessing the past to fill you up, for you are experiencing a gift from Spirit.
