Diverging Personalities
One theory is that one twin will take after the father and the other will be more like their mother. So, although their charts are nearly the same, the way that they express them can be quite different. Another approach takes into account that time and experiences will flavor the way each twin interprets and expresses their charts.
Twins don’t come into the world at the same moment in time; physically it’s impossible. There can be anywhere from a few minutes to several hours between their births. When we have a long period of time between births, it is easier to understand why there might be some subtle yet telling differences in personality, but there can be changes to a natal chart in as little as three to four minutes.

The Pace of the Stars
Some astrological placements do move quickly — rising signs move one degree approximately every four minutes and move into a completely new sign about every two hours, so there’s always a possibility that twins will have different ascendants. slower-moving placements could be affected by just a few minutes’ difference in birth time and move into a different astrological house, causing even greater differences between the two. This is also the case when twins are born at the time of a cusp. You can easily have one on each side, resulting in two different personalities, interests, and strengths.
One Birthday, Two Different People
So that can explain differences when there is a fairly significant period of time between the births, but what about those twins that are born within seconds of each other? How can they be so different? As mentioned above, if a birth occurs near or on a cusp, that is one way to explain differences in a set of twins. Another possibility can come from the fact that twins might express different aspects of the chart. Astrologer Liz Greene explains that “[Twins] ‘divide’ the chart between them early in life. If they live and grow up together, they cannot both enact the same roles (which are part of both their personalities) but tend to choose different roles.” “Often, the ‘alpha twin’ is stronger and makes his/her choice, leaving the rest to the other.” She also notes that these roles and expressions can evolve throughout the twins’ lives, and that it’s really only in twins who are raised together that a chart’s traits get split up in this way.
Twins who are raised separately may in fact be more alike than those who grow up together, as they will never have the feeling that they need to be different from their mirror-half. They have a freedom that those raised together don’t have. Two siblings born at the same time and living together will compete for resources and attention. It’s natural for them to try and distinguish themselves from their twin, to avoid the constant comparison they live under.
There’s Always a Choice
