Female Power Players

The astrology of heads of state

by Cortney Litwin

They have it all: exceptional talent, drive and smarts, an unstoppable combination that enabled Madeleine Albright, Condoleezza Rice and Hillary Clinton - who are past and present United States Secretaries of State - to rise to the heights of power in the boy's club of politics. Not only that, they have some intriguing astrological elements in common.

Both Rice and Clinton are Scorpios, while Albright is the opposite sign of Taurus. Being fixed signs means they have extraordinary perseverance and an obsession with influence. That isn't surprising considering their accomplishments. But what may surprise you is their outstanding intuitive gifts. This sensitivity helped guide them along the complex and thorny path of foreign affairs.

Another intriguing commonality reveals the hand of fate. When Rice attended the University of Denver, one of her professors happened to be Albright's father, Josef Korbel, who established the school's Graduate School of International Studies. He was instrumental in Rice's decision to forgo a career in music to pursue international studies instead. (Note: Rice is an exceptionally talented pianist who performed a private recital for Britain's Queen of England in 2008.) She went on to become Secretary of State under George W. Bush.

Albright and Clinton have a more obvious tie - Bill Clinton appointed Albright as Secretary of State during his presidency, making her the first woman to attain that office and the highest ranking woman in the history of the United States. She is now a close friend and informal advisor to the current Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton. Albright is also a top advisor on security matters for President Barack Obama. Interestingly, this fixed-sign Taurus woman seems to have some karma with other fixed-sign politicians - in addition to Scorpio, Leo is a fixed sign, which happens to be Sun sign of both Bill Clinton and Obama.

But that's not all... Let's take a closer look at their charts to discover the secret of their success.

Madeleine Albright (May 15, 1937)
The daughter of a diplomat, Albright was born in Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic) to a Jewish family. She was raised Catholic after her parents converted to avoid persecution, but in 1948, they were forced to flee to the United States after the Germans invaded their homeland. Albright's Moon, which rules family, is either in home-loving Cancer or proud Leo, depending on her time of birth. Her Moon-Pluto conjunction reveals the intense struggles of her family - many of her Jewish relatives, including three of her grandparents, were killed in the Holocaust. This influence makes her emotionally complex, which likely contributed to the failure of her marriage to newspaper journalist Joseph Albright. Certainly her Sun, Mercury, and Uranus in earthy Taurus and Mars in willful Scorpio give her tremendous strength. She's pragmatic, stubborn and uncompromising. But Taurus has a gentle side as well, and all three of her Taurus placements are trine Neptune, the planet of compassion and intuition. It is Neptune that gives her the desire to serve and to make the world a better place. Albright serves on numerous boards and is currently a professor at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

Condoleezza Rice (November 14, 1954)
Rice has Sun, Mercury, Venus and Saturn in secretive, protective Scorpio, which made her the perfect choice as Bush's security advisor during his first Presidential term. Her intense focus, strong will and passion for democracy helped get her appointed as Secretary of State during his second term, the first black woman to attain that office. But while such a focused nature can be a positive trait, it can make one blind to other avenues - or blind to the truth. There are some who have accused Rice of ignoring the truth and blindly following the policies of the Bush Administration concerning Iraq when no weapons of mass destruction were found. Having too narrow a vision and a disinclination to change direction are two of her greatest challenges.

As for her personal life, Rice is single, although she was once engaged to Rick Upchurch in the 1970s. One gets the impression that she is completely engrossed in her career, which is typical of such a single-minded sign. However, with Moon in Cancer, she has a nurturing and sensitive emotional nature, which is completely hidden from public view but evident to those few who are close to her. After all, Scorpio is very selective in who they love and trust. Such a strong water-sign emphasis also makes her unusually intuitive. What's more, Venus in Scorpio says she is just fine being alone for long stretches of time, especially with Pluto squaring her Sun and Venus. But once she offers her heart, she's intensely passionate and possessive. Additionally, her strongly aspected Venus gives her a gift for music - hence her gift as a pianist who has performed in public since childhood. At age 15 she played a selection by Mozart with the Denver Symphony, and she currently performs with a quartet in Washington. A multi-talented woman, indeed!

Hilary Clinton (October 26, 1947)
Scorpio and extremes go hand-in-hand, and Clinton's life has run the gamut of the highest highs and lowest lows - all in front of the public, which is downright painful for such a private sign. Her role as first lady while her husband was President was tarnished by his infidelity and near-expulsion from office. Still, Scorpio is the phoenix rising from the flames, and Clinton, with Sun, Mercury and Venus in Scorpio, is an outstanding example of rising from the ashes of scandal to reinvent oneself. She went on to serve as a U.S. senator for New York and was a leading candidate for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination, losing narrowly to Obama. Now she is Secretary of State and fourth in the line for succession for president.

Adding to her considerable ambition are a trio of Leo conjunctions that include Mars, which gives her the drive to lead - Saturn, which says her karma is to lead and Pluto, which heightens her drive for power. The lady is formidable! Fortunately, her Moon in Pisces softens her emotional nature and gives her a profound compassion for the underprivileged. Throughout her lengthy career, she has been involved in numerous causes for children and struggling families. This sensitivity and insightfulness may serve her well as a diplomat.

Although not many of us are as accomplished as Albright, Rice and Clinton, their success has broken glass ceilings for women everywhere, which makes it that much easier for all of us to reach for the stars.
