The United Nations is perhaps the best institutional embodiment of the ideals of human rights and cooperation between equals.

It is the only truly universal organization for human rights, peace, war, disarmament, education, environmental, health and wealth issues. In fact, all the larger problems facing the entire world are discussed and disputed in this assembly of nations. Its mission is as various as is its membership, to create dialogue, to promote business and cultural exchange, while also mitigating and mediating conflicts, protecting citizens and advocating for human rights in every country.

The United Nations is a powerful example of how a diversity of cultures and opinions can result in a united response - from many cultures and opinions to one consensus.

On October 24th, the United Nations celebrates its 61st birthday. It's a good time to ask how you can play with and entertain the ideal of diversity and cultural understanding in your life?

Often, there's a natural tendency to be drawn to like-minded people, people who share your interests, ideas and sometimes even your ethnicity. Yet, psychologists have proven that when people are forced into groups assembled deliberately for diversity, they come up with measurably more creative solutions to problems. This was especially true when there was conflict. Somehow being faced with widely divergent responses gave the group the need and the opportunity to stretch their minds and come up with unique solutions.

If you want to increase your creativity and your perspective, simply try talking with people who are culturally different from you. One fun way to explore other cultures is to attend festivals. Search online for festivals in your city--there should be a wealth of cultural festivals for you to choose from and to attend. While enjoying yourself, you'll learn about new ways to cook, new types of dance, and new cultural forms. This will be an education in itself and will spur your creativity.

If you're interested in exploring other cultures there are also wonderful resources online. You can explore music from hundreds of cultures online at http://www.smithsonianglobalsound.org/culturegroups.aspx or browse easily through the cultural arts of the world at http://www.folklife.si.edu/explore/online_exhibitions.html.

Creating cultural awareness is the best way of stimulating curiosity, interest and creativity. Hopefully then, cultural, ethnic and religious tolerance will follow. By infusing your experience with different cultural traditions to create a "United Nations" atmosphere in your life, you may even help make a more complex and more compassionate world through understanding.
