Celebrities are well known to subscribe to good luck charms. Cameron Diaz wears a charm around her neck meant to ward off the effect of aging (sure looks like it works!). Brad Pitt wears a shark tooth necklace, of which surf legend says protects the wearer from danger. Sharon Stone and Richard Gere are among the Hollywood names who look to crystals for their protective energy. And that red string spotted around the wrists of Madonna, Britney Spears and Demi Moore? It's meant to ward off the "evil eye" from others who would want to stop their success.

The Greeks
Pick a penny up all day long you'll… I bet you can finish this common phrase. If you can't find a penny, try rubbing a rabbit's foot, tossing salt over your shoulder, tossing a coin into a wishing well, or if you need a quick hit, cross your fingers! Luck, destiny, fate and the idea that an event or thing can set into motion a string of disastrous events dates all the way back to ancient Greece. Families would be sure to keep a "Herm" or statue of Hermes to give their homes prosperity and good health. Spilling salt was an omen of bad luck that is still with us today. Quick! If you knock over the shaker, better throw some over your shoulder!

Italy
Italian culture (profoundly influenced by the ancient Romans) is loaded with superstitions believed to influence your luck. A "punch of air" (leaving the window open when asleep or driving with a window wide open) can bring very bad luck, even paralysis. A hat on a bed brings death (oh no!) and the yucca plant in the home means a marriage could come to an end. And if you see a nun, better touch a piece of iron!

United States
Here in America, we are so sure that the number 13 is infused with bad luck that many buildings are built without a thirteenth floor. We ask the groundhog to predict our weather for the year and always, always, keep the flag off the ground. Don't step on a crack in the sidewalk (or you'll break your mama's back), and if you need lots of luck, better get a horseshoe and hang it right side up, or all your luck will spill out.

Your luck
The best thing about luck is that it can change. One day a black cat may walk across your path and the next, you find a four-leaf clover. And may you always have good luck! To ensure you're doing everything you can to attrack good fortune, try the talismans below. Charms dangling from bracelets and necklaces are very hot right now, whether worn layered or solo, for both men and women. Here is what they mean:
