Let\u2019s explore the different types of filters we should think about when looking at our dreams.<\/p>\n
When analyzing your own dreams, you should ideally run them through several filters.The first <\/em>being the simplest and most obvious:what did you do the day of the dream? Did you have an enormous argument and then dream of explosives or buildings being torn down?<\/p>\n What did you eat before you went to bed? The meaning of your dream could be caused by something as simple as eating something that didn\u2019t agree with you, and be a biological reaction. These types of dreams are just reflections of recent experiences you\u2019ve had.<\/p>\n Do any of the symbols in your dream have special meaning for you?This is the second level dream<\/em>. For instance if the color red is in your dream, does it have special meaning for you? (i.e. is red the color of a favorite dress you wore to the prom, etc.)<\/p>\n These types of dreams also include cultural symbols<\/em>. These are symbols we all share, and whose definitions are common in all dreams. For instance, most of us have dreamt of flying when we were in our early teens. During adolescence, this dream usually depicts freedom from limitations, in this case biological. Some other common universal symbols are the cross, commonly viewed as a symbol of Christianity. Water is another universal symbol regarded as emotions. The choppier the water, the more unsettled the emotions.<\/p>\n Level three dreams<\/em> contain archetypal images. In other words, these are images drawn from the collective unconscious. According to psychiatrist Carl Jung, archetypal images are a shared set of symbols that have reoccurred throughout history and across cultural boundaries. Some examples include \u201cMother Earth\u201d or \u201cFather Christmas\u201d. Do you get the idea? These level three dreams usually occur during a time of great stress and transition such as marriage, divorce, or death of a loved one.
