Something I\u2019ve been working on a lot since my Saturn return a few years ago is living as authentically as possible. I\u2019ve found that while this is a personal and private endeavor, the only place where this really matters is in interpersonal relationships. Things like self-doubt, shame, and past trauma are put under a magnifying glass when we\u2019re forced to confront these aspects of ourselves for someone else. In this week\u2019s Daily Focus, I want to look at authenticity, how we focus on what it means for our own healing journeys, and what that means for our relationships; friends; family; and lovers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The choice to let our true selves be seen.”<\/em><\/strong>\n–Bren\u00e9 Brown<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n At its most basic, authenticity is a choice. It\u2019s a choice\nthat then requires commitment, access to tools, and a willingness to show up\nand do your best. There isn\u2019t a single moment that defines us, but rather a\nseries of moments that we can look at and examine, take note of where we feel\nlike our true selves, and where we feel the need to deflect and hide. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe are all connected; To each other, biologically. To\nthe earth, chemically. To the rest of the Universe atomically.\u201d<\/em><\/strong> –Neil\nDeGrasse Tyson<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Connection is at the heart of authenticity. Remembering that\nwe are all the same, not just biologically, but spiritually; we are all here trying\nto do what we think is best, trying to create a world that we want our children\nto live in. Being able to accept fault in others is a good first step to being\nable to accept fault in ourselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI define connection as the energy that exists between\npeople when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive\nwithout judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the\nrelationship.\u201d<\/em><\/strong> –Bren\u00e9 Brown<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Connection is the ability to be authentic with someone and appreciate their authenticity in return. This is why, when people present a false face to the world and we, as trusting people, believe them\u2014the pain is deep, and often lasting. When it happens enough, we begin to mistrust people who may not deserve it out of self-preservation. It\u2019s impossible to control others or their journey to authenticity, but modeling it is a good start. All we can do is show up with honesty and defer back to empathy when we\u2019re met with anything less. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cStay away from conflictive, negative people that pull\nyou down, because they contaminate your energy and impede your progress. Search\nfor people who look at the world with optimism, that inspire you, make you\nhappy, and provide peace of mind.\u201d<\/em><\/strong> –Pablo<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n The second side of the “you can\u2019t control others” coin is that you can choose to separate yourself from people who are not on your level.
