It\u2019s a new year! I want to return to my favorite medium to\ntalk about cycles, beginnings, endings, and how we can focus this New Year\nenergy in productive ways. I have a little bit of a personal vendetta against\nNew Year\u2019s resolutions and here is why: I was born on January 3, which I\nlovingly refer to as Dead Christmas Tree Day. By the time my birthday rolls\naround, everyone is broke, hungover, and on a diet. It\u2019s the worst. I have had\nto beg my friends for years to put their New Selves off for a few extra days to\nindulge me. Now, in my thirties, it\u2019s less important to me that people be\nwilling to party hard and flashy, thankfully, but the distaste for suddenly\ndropping all things fun and luxurious in favor of restriction is just such a\nCapricorn vibe, and one that I appreciate most of the time, but absolutely not\non my special day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
In this week\u2019s Daily Focus, I want to look at how we can\napproach cycles, endings, beginnings, restrictions, and indulgence, because\nonly by finding balance can we enact any long-term change. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a time for looking\nat what we\u2019re letting go of, but not in a wasteful sense. In an ecological\nsense, excrement can become the fertilizer for our internal soil. What crap, so\nto speak, can we turn around and put beneath us, allowing it to be the catalyst\nfor something new. This card is about growth, about gardens, about the cycle of\nlife. Carry that energy with you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe Ten of Swords. A card of letting go, facing\nfears, and leaving the worst behind you.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This is one of the scary cards in the deck, one that\nindicates the end of something you\u2019ve fought hard for. It\u2019s about being out of\noptions\u2014or out of time. The year has ended, and the clock has, metaphorically\nand literally, run out. It\u2019s time to let go, and not in the way the Death card\nasks us to, where we use our past as a foundation. Here it\u2019s time to do things\ndifferently, even if it means starting over. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe Devil. A card of examining, embracing, and\nunderstanding your vices.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Oh, good old New Year\u2019s resolutions! This is a time where we\nare all forced to examine our vices. It makes sense, then, that this is the\ncard associated with Capricorn, who rules the skies above at this time. It\u2019s an\ninteresting choice on the surface, but the more you understand about both the\ncard and the sign, the more the symbiosis of restriction and indulgence becomes\napparent and urgent.
