Rewrite Your Life!<\/h4>\n

Who are you?\u00a0<\/em>In all likelihood, when you think about that question, you get a lot of answers in your head. You might get who you are in your job, or your relationship, or your hobbies. You might think about what your friends and relatives think of you. Or something else, something more intangible and spiritual<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Chances are, almost all of those stories were coming from people who were trying to help, and had your best interests in mind\u2014and those stories probably did help. But they all have one thing in common: They came from people who weren’t you, and who couldn’t see all of you: only the part of you that they directly had experience of, filtered through their own perceptions, background and biases.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

When we’re young, we rely on the stories others tell us about ourselves and the world to shape a personality that’s capable of surviving in this big, crazy world. But as we grow older, and more sure of ourselves, these stories can become limiting: and we’ve likely accumulated so many of them, from so many different people, that we’re bound to be hopelessly confused about who we are, since there’s no way all of them can correlate.<\/p>\n

Life, real life, begins when we let go of what others have told us about ourselves. You can calmly set aside the giant journal in your mind called “me” that’s full of other people’s writing and scribbling and even defacing, and put it up on your shelf to reference if you need it. Or you can burn the whole thing outright. Either way, start a new book. Pick up a pen. And write the story of your own life\u2014how YOU want to live it, on YOUR terms. It can be informed by the past, but make sure of one thing: that you’re the one writing it.<\/p>\n

Anything else means living your life for others, and not for yourself.<\/p>\n
