Unless you&#8217;re excellent at <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.californiapsychics.com\/blog\/2009\/06\/decisive-moves.html\">making snap decisions<\/a><\/strong>, this type of exhaustion likely weighs on you every day.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/08\/21\/magazine\/do-you-suffer-from-decision-fatigue.html\"><em>The New York Times<\/em> reports:<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Decision fatigue helps explain why ordinarily sensible people get angry at colleagues and families, splurge on clothes, buy junk food at the supermarket and can\u2019t resist the dealer\u2019s offer to rustproof their new car. No matter how rational and high-minded you try to be, you can\u2019t make decision after decision without paying a biological price. It\u2019s different from ordinary physical fatigue \u2014 you\u2019re not consciously aware of being tired \u2014 but you\u2019re low on mental energy. The more choices you make throughout the day, the harder each one becomes for your brain, and eventually it looks for shortcuts, usually in either of two very different ways. One shortcut is to become reckless: to act impulsively instead of expending the energy to first think through the consequences. (Sure, tweet that photo! What could go wrong?) The other shortcut is the ultimate energy saver: do nothing. Instead of agonizing over decisions, avoid any choice. Ducking a decision often creates bigger problems in the long run, but for the moment, it eases the mental strain. You start to resist any change, any potentially risky move \u2014 like releasing a prisoner who might commit a crime. So the fatigued judge on a parole board takes the easy way out, and the prisoner keeps doing time.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Decision fatigue\u00a0is the newest discovery involving a phenomenon called ego depletion, a term coined by the\u00a0social psychologist Roy F. Baumeister\u00a0in homage to a Freudian hypothesis. Freud speculated that the self, or ego, depended on mental activities involving the transfer of energy. He was vague about the details, though, and quite wrong about some of them (like his idea that artists \u201csublimate\u201d sexual energy into their work, which would imply that adultery should be especially rare at artists\u2019 colonies).
