An Introduction to Elemental Attunement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Many people split the world into four basic elements: earth, air, fire, and water. However, there is also a fifth — the element of Spirit. These elements have been foundational in Egyptian mythologies, Tarot, astrology, and various religions. They are also thought to be connected to the Earth\u2019s seasons and can impact the balance within a circle (or five-pointed star).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The introduction of these four elements is credited to Sicilian philosopher Empedocles in the fifth century BCE. The concept of the four elements was later taught by the philosopher Aristotle in ancient Greece. He also played a role in the introduction of the fifth element, Spirit. Notably, his theory and use of the element Spirit differs from that of the other four elements, which occur naturally. In many ways, Spirit can be seen as the glue that holds everything together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elemental Attunement Rituals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One simple and helpful ritual to practice balancing and grounding<\/a> is to light a candle. This is a great starting ritual for connecting oneself to the elements because it includes all four of the base elements, and potentially even Spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the sake of this exercise, take a candle — any candle will do. Hold it in your hands and focus your intentions on the candle. Do you have a prayer or simple request? If so, note that you have already introduced the element of Spirit into the exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, as you hold the candle in your hands, pay attention to its solid form. The hard wax candle is representative of earth. Now, light your candle. Bring the element of fire up to the wick and watch it begin burning. Then, if you place your hand a few inches above the flame, you\u2019ll feel the element of air as you identify the energy being released in the form of heat. Lastly, take note of the wax melting, and beginning to pool like a small pond. This is the element of water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why Elemental Attunement Matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Now you have a basic background and understanding of the five elements — but why is this important to know? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, in each person is a balance of the elements<\/a>. Our physical existence is the element earth. Our emotions and compassion are associated with water, while our intellect and creativity are connected to the element of air. Finally, our passion and our motivation are linked to the element of fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cultivating your ability to see the world in terms of the elements can help you discover divine balance. When you have a sense of the four basic energies, you will lead a more balanced life. If you are feeling a little lethargic and unmotivated<\/a>, you might realize that your \u201cfire\u201d is lower than it should be. Perhaps a day at the beach under the sun or some time in front of the fireplace will help warm your soul and restore balance. Likewise, if you are having an emotional day filled with tears and sadness, it\u2019s possible that your water energy is running high. Taking on an inspiring creative project, such as painting or crafting, could introduce a little air energy into your life and carry away some of the heavy water that\u2019s getting you down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
