Psychic Workout: Music Makes the World Go Round

Have you ever met someone who doesn’t like music? Is this even possible? Think about it for a moment. Maybe you can’t bear a minute of country music, but love to rock out with the big-hair-bands of the 80s. Then there’s your best friend who listens solely to classical music, or your housekeeper who cleans to opera. Why is it that we can all appreciate some form of music? Sounds that we identify with, that we can relate to, produce a frequency strong enough to touch our soul.

The significance of sound and music can be traced as far back as history has been recorded. Prior to our current day and age, humans formed different cultural societies and communities. As these communities evolved, so did sound as a means of communication. These primary sounds can be traced to the most primitive form of connection to the heavenly bodies.

Sounds were recognized as concentrations of energy, each producing a different vibration and frequency. It was believe that different sound configurations would create various degrees of energy and power. By way of chanting, humming or repetitive intonations, these sounds created vibrations which were transmitted to the heavens, almost like radio wave frequencies, as a method of communing with the divine.

The days of community gatherings and singing to connect with a higher source for the purpose of unity and prayer is almost forgotten. The modern understanding of music and sound is strictly a personal connection. As a result of this shift, music has become more of a resource for listening, rather than creating. By listening to modern music, one can identify with the musical artists’ ideas, but they aren’t creating their own ideas, nor are they transmitting the ideas to the creator in a form of prayer. Sadly, the act of listening, as opposed to creating sound and music, only mimics the deeper connection to spirit. There have been revivals, and sacred rituals carried out in an attempt of reconnecting with this raw form of divine communication, but in the world we live in today, polluted with noise and humming or frequencies, our direct connection with spirit through sound has been compromised, and certainly not utilized as it once was.

How do you feel when you listen to these different sounds? What emotions arise? Do some sounds make your cringe, while other sounds feel like home? What sound makes you feel strongest in your connection to spirit?

Crashing waves
Telephones ringing
Your mother’s voice
Lightening
The violin
Dogs barking
Airplanes
Howling winds
Woodpeckers
Your favorite song
Horns honking
Piano music
Birds chirping
Garbage trucks dumping
Elevators dinging
Drums
Babies crying
Trickling streams

The simplest elements of music have not changed over time. Sound began by leaves crackling, the banging of objects, plucking a string, or air rolling over the surface of an opening. Since many of the earliest forms of sound and music that were discovered originated from nature, when seeking a spiritual connection, returning to nature is a good place to start. Spend some time listening to nature’s method for communicating. Different elements in nature have their way of talking, and I encourage you to develop your own sound, chant, instrumental chord, or rhythm to talk to God.

At the root of all power and motion, there is music and rhythm, the play of patterned frequencies against the matrix of time. We know that every particle in the physical universe takes its characteristics from the pitch and pattern and overtones of its particular frequencies, its singing. Before we make music, music makes us. (Joachim-Ernst Berendt, The World is Sound )
