Presidents and Mystics

A mystical alliance between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, two of the Founding Fathers of the United States, is a compelling example of the hand of destiny. They were brought together karmically to help found a nation, but perhaps the most intriguing synchronicity happened on the day they died.

On his deathbed at his farm in Massachusetts, the last words of John Adams were, “Thomas Jefferson survives.” But in fact Jefferson had died just hours earlier in Virginia. What’s more, they died on July 4, 1826, on the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. So does an otherworldly bond show up when comparing their astrology charts? You bet!

First, some history…
Jefferson and Adams were appointed to a committee in 1776 to draft a declaration of independence. The monumental document, which was written primarily by Jefferson, proclaimed the 13 colonies in North America free and independent from Great Britain – and heralded the birth of the United States of America.

Adams and Jefferson may have been collaborators in the quest for freedom, but they were political rivals later on: As the second United States President, Adams lost his bid for re-election to Jefferson. However, their rivalry gave way to a deep friendship near the end of their lives, which included a 14-year correspondence. They had a complex relationship that is revealed by intense astrological ties.

The stars of John Adams
Jefferson may have been the more eloquent of the two, but Adams’ warrior spirit (and talent for persuasion) was invaluable in the fight for independence. And a fighter he was. Born on October 30, 1735, Adams had Sun, Mercury and Venus in influential Scorpio, the most driven sign of the zodiac. Single-minded, pragmatic and arrogant – and well acquainted with the power of words – Adams used his talent as a lawyer to champion the Declaration of Independence. His Moon in groundbreaking Aries, the sign of the warrior, intensified his formidable nature and made him a pioneer in the freedom movement that all citizens of the United States benefit from today.

The stars of Thomas Jefferson
Jefferson was also a pioneer with a brilliant intellect. In addition to penning the Declaration of Independence and being the third United States President, he achieved acclaim as a lawyer, architect, horticulturist, inventor and founder of the University of Virginia. Born on April 13, 1743, Jefferson had Sun in headstrong Aries, which was a combustible energy with Adams’ Sun in Scorpio; they certainly fueled the fire of each other’s ambition. Also, the Aries tie with Adams’ Moon means they shared a vision of how to launch this new nation – and the drive to make it happen.

Their incredible influence, however, came from Pluto, the planet of death and rebirth. Jefferson’s Pluto in Scorpio was conjunct Adams’ Sun and Venus, a tie that amplified each other’s power and enabled them to effectively work toward ending British rule and establishing the United States (death and rebirth). Their Pluto connection also promoted intense competition between them and, later on, an enduring friendship.

Past lives
Another karmic tie was Jefferson’s South Node in Taurus opposite Adams’ Scorpio placements, which indicates a past life connection. The strongest indicator of their karmic destiny, though, is revealed through Uranus, the planet of freedom and enlightenment. Adams’ Uranus was in Sagittarius, near Jefferson’s Moon in (you guessed it!) Sagittarius. This means they shared a leadership role in achieving freedom from political and religious oppression.

Even in death, their mysterious bond was evident. Jefferson’s Sun fell into Adams’ eighth house of death, which may account for Adams’ thoughts of Jefferson just before he crossed over. It’s interesting that most people assume that Adams was wrong in saying Jefferson survived because he was already dead. But perhaps Adams perceived Jefferson’s death and knew he lived on in spirit, which would give a new meaning to his uttering, “Thomas Jefferson survives.”
