Sustainable Food Choices for Your Health and Mother Earth

Locavore, Herbavore, Omnivore?

You’ve considered how your diet affects your health. But have you considered how your diet affects the environment? People talk about organics in a holistic manner. Eating organic food is better for your body, and better for the environment. (Not all of us can afford it, but we know that it’s true.) Often the thoughts end there.

There’s a whole new lexicon being developed that is the beginning of a larger conversation about food, diet, and the environment. And while much of the information feels daunting at first, it’s not all depressing once you start empowering yourself with your ability to choose what kind of impact you are having on the planet we call home.

From the locavore movement, to the slow food movement, to the vegan and raw diet movements, to Community Supported Agriculture groups (CSAs), sustainable aquaculture programs, and the resurgence of the “victory garden” (also known by the name kitchen garden, amongst others), our nation and the world are beginning to eat differently.

The food movement is a newer, fresher, more friendly and empowering face of the environmental movement. With all this information, and all these great options, making choices is where your empowerment comes in. Here are three simple steps to making a change in your dietary life:

1. Research food values (nutritional and environmental) and food costs (environmental as well as out-of-pocket).

2. Make a list of your food values, like:

· I value the health of the ocean
· I value the health of the rainforest
· I value the global ecosystem
· I value the rights of indigenous cultures
· I value my health

3. Look at your values, and your habits, and see where they don’t match up. If you value the health of the oceans but eat over-harvested fish, decide what action you’re willing to take to create a match-up between your ideology (values) and actions.

    Hi Lasara,
What an interesting article, It is my belief that one cannot become completely in balance with ones life until they are connected with everything around them, which is all of your wonderful list,
    · I value the health of the ocean
    · I value the health of the rainforest
    · I value the global ecosystem
    · I value the rights of indigenous cultures
    · I value my health
    Blessings and Big Hugs!
