Harvest and Release on the Autumn Equinox

Sun in Libra

As the sun enters Libra on the day of the Autumnal Equinox, it brings with it an energetic shift that invites greater balance in our lives. After a season when our energies run the highest, it’s now time to prepare ourselves for a slower pace as winter approaches by balancing our thoughts, bodies and home. This is the time to balance between harvesting what sustains us and releasing what no longer serves us. This is the time to make decisions that fit best in your life. What seeds or goals have you planted that now you can harvest with gratitude? What can you release from your life that no longer keeps you balanced?

We can see the harvest and release dance of balance within nature. There are signs of the Autumnal Equinox all around us. The trees start to shed their leaves after two seasons of drawing in the power of the sun. Before the sun starts its retreat, there is a moment in time that light and dark are equal. It is the perfect time to be in both worlds, to see what you need to balance your life clearly. As the sun starts its retreat, the days release time and become shorter invoking personal release and surrender.

Here are a few ways to enter the transition of summer to fall in the beautiful harvest-release balance of life:

Release the Old

This time of year I love to do a total cleansing of my surroundings, a spring cleaning in the fall. The summer months are so beautiful I don’t tend to spend a lot of time inside so by this time in the year, my home needs a little love. I clean from top to bottom and then start releasing the items that I no longer need. This is a great time to gather old clothes, toys and household items that can be put back into the harvest-release cycle. Anything that you release will be gladly harvested by someone who needs it. Take clothes to your local charity thrift store and any blankets and towels to your local animal shelter.

Remember that your surroundings aren’t limited to your home. Your body and mind need to release as well. We are entering a transition into a season when we bring with us only what sustains us be it food, people or thoughts. This is the time to release old patterns of thinking and forgive just a little more as these are heavy energies to deal with as the slumber of winter approaches.

It’s wise once a season to reevaluate your eating patterns. Decide right now what your health will look like over the coming months as the season and your metabolism slow down and then look at your food. Release any food that doesn’t sustain your vision for yourself. I know, it’s a hard thing to do. Last year I decided that I would categorize all of my foods into not-so-bad, bad, and worse. Get rid of everything in the worse pile, most things in the bad pile and a few things from the not-so-bad pile. This makes the release a lot more sustainable in the long run and you won’t feel completely deprived.

Harvest and Gratitude

It’s time to harvest or gather that which will sustain you through the fall and winter and extend gratitude into the Universe. It’s time for gardens to be complete their bounty and put to rest until spring, literally and energetically. The garden of life possibilities that you planted and tended to all year is now coming to its full capacity; it’s time to reflect and harvest what you’ve accomplished this year. It’s time to be grateful for all that you inspired to do and all that you did. Go ahead, be grateful for yourself. Really.

Harvest or invite in any foods and activities that help you with your vision of health. Activities should be a little slower than those of summer. Decide what you need for your overall wellbeing. Get a check-up, go see the acupuncturist and even get a massage. Invite in all that helps you get balanced as the seasons change.

“Squirrel Medicine.” 🙂 Gather only those things that serve your highest good, physically, mentally, emotionally, heart and hearth…release the rest.
