10 Summer Stress Busters

Summer is here, and the living should be easy… It’s time to use the sunshine, amp up your energy, and kick stress in the butt. Try these ten ways to beat stress and enjoy your summer:

1. Exercise. It releases endorphins, which produce a natural high. No time to get to the yoga studio? Try taking the stairs instead of the elevator.

2. Eat more fruit! Fruit provides the sweetness that can brighten up your afternoon without having a sugar crash.

3. Private time. You may have a busy lifestyle and be contemplating a career change and new activities for your kids or spouse, but you need to do something for yourself every day. It could be as simple as ten quiet free minutes doodling or enjoying a cup of ice tea. Make some “me” time.

4. Get a pet! Even if it’s a goldfish, watching it swim around the bowl will be soothing. A pet gives unconditional love and can help make stress evaporate.

5. Take a break. Once an hour, get up from the computer, walk around the office or around the block if you can. Your eyes need to rest.

6. Sleep more! Turn off that TV and get to bed. A good night’s rest can lower your blood pressure and cholesterol levels. It’s the time when your body’s cells repair the damage from the day.

7. Prioritize. Look at your to-do list. Is there something that can be moved to tomorrow? Separate out the tasks that are more time sensitive and focus on those instead of being overwhelmed by a huge list.

8. Delegate. Admit it – you need some help. Be it a job search or grocery shopping, there are people in your life who can alleviate the load, so don’t be afraid to ask.

9. Laugh. It’s the best medicine. It helps relax the heart, and adds to your enjoyment of life.

10. Plan ahead. Make all the meals you need the night before so that you have a healthy option instead of grabbing something on the fly from a vending machine mid-afternoon.

What are your favorite ways to beat stress?

Hello and a wonderful day to you Colleen,

Thank you so much for the great list of things to try. I was starting to feel the heat myself. It sort of gets to you slowly and you start feeling a little extra sluggish. It’s very important to prepare your plans and adjust your choice of things to do with the change in the season. I’m glad you wrote this article. The key to really enjoying the summer is to increase your fluid intake. It’ll help you stay hydrated, alert and active. Do it every 2 hours no matter where you are or what you’re doing. The more you sweat, the more you detoxify your system. And I love that you put exercise and yoga right at the top of the list. The best thing about summer is that you can try a lot of these things plus a few sports, outdoors and get closer to nature. And if you’re creative, this season can really inspire you in many ways. Plus you can always cool off if you like getting wet. The most important thing off course is to make room for all these things in your plans, which can be hard sometimes. And it only gets more memorable if you’re coupled and you do it with that special someone or your family.

I wish everybody at WC and all my fellow readers out there a wonderful and fun summer.

P.S – The best thing about sweet warm California sunshine is that it’s free of cost, free from taxes and free for everyone to enjoy 🙂

    Hi,
    I faithfully do # 3, # 4, and , since I love animals…..I do find relaxation and humor even in my pets……

It’s been hot ( upper 90’s with heat index over 100 degrees) where I live , down south here, and my dog has a special way to cool off…..he comes in from being outside for a brief few minutes, lies on his back spread-eagle under a ceiling fan and watches me upside down !
In fact, he’s doing this now as I type. Cracks me up every time ! What a clown!

    Blessed Be )O(
